Advice on how much my Boss 302 project is worth

Ok, some of you may remember about a year ago that my brother wanted to trade me his 1970 Boss 302 for my Cobra. Well anyway we didn't make the deal, he ended up buying a 2010 GT and now is deployed in Afghanistan. He has asked me to try to sell the Boss for him

He has done a rotisserie restoration of all the sheet metal, about $30,000 invested along on the sheet metal but it is done to show standards. The car is complete with the original motor, trans and an N case rear end that I think was original to the car. Some of the really expensive stuff is missing like the rev limiter, louvers, spoilers.... chrome is in good shape but it does need at least one Boss fender, and it may be missing some misalliance parts. One of the issues is the car is completely disassembled pretty much a bare shell but all the parts are there. I'm wondering is interest in original Boss 302s has gone up due to the 2012 Boss. Any opinions and suggestions are welcome, thanks everyone

The market is down right now on all collector cars but history shows it will recover. It's always hard to get what you have in a car out of it. I would recommend starting with cleaning the Boss up. Alot of work has been done and it doesn't need to deteriorate. Catalog and take pictures of all the parts that go to the car. Gather before pictures and during restoration pictures along with receipts of parts and labor for the work that has been done. Also if you have any historical documents, i.e. window sticker, tag receipts, title, drag race time slips, etc, gather them and put them in a folder. Advertise the Boss in the Mustang community, as you have done here, the Boss Registry, Shelby club, places where people know what it is you are selling. Still didn't answer your question about value, but you will just have to negotiate that. If it were me, I would continue with the project to completion even if it takes several years. The 2010 GT is depreciating as we speak and this BOSS is better than money in the bank!

Phil,

I hate to tell you this, but due to the car being in the current condition it is in, meaning disassembled, he will never get out of it, what he has in it. On the plus side, the original motor and tranny will make it worth more than a non numbers matching car. I have had two 68 fastbacks and a 69 is on my future to do list and I'm always looking at them on ebay, craigslist, classic car trader, mustang trader, etc and my guess is somewhere in the low to mid $20k, maybe even lower. I know he put a lot of sheetmetal work into it, but the first thing a potential buyer is going to do is use the excuses "I have to put it all back together" "I have to get it painted." and "how do I know everything is there?"

This is one of those projects that I'd hang onto and eventually try and finish, because if you sell it now, you will take an absolute beating. I'm no expert, but I have had experience buying and selling old mustangs and unless he needs the money real bad, I'd hang on to the car.

Also,

I agree with Ken, cataloging and taking pics of all the parts will help. I did that with my current project. If I was a buyer I would very much appreciate that, but if you didn't take the car apart yourself and don't know what all is there, that can be a nightmare and is very time consuming, because unless you are ready to catalog every nut and bolt, don't bother doing it at all. A potential buyer will be trying to calculate what else will be needed for them to complete the project, and if you can't provide an accurate inventory of what all is there, they will estimate what they think is there and lowball you..........guaranteed.

I wish I was done with my 68 and you were closer........I'd make you an offer.

thanks for the honest input guys. I told him a lot of the same things. I think he regrets even starting the project and the classic car market crashing like it did compounds all this. I will try to make an inventory of everything that is taken apart. The car was complete when he purchased it but he took it apart to perfect the body work.

I'm going to continue trying to persuade him to keep the car, or at least complete more of it before he sells. Sadly I think he is willing to take a hit on the car because he wants the money to put down on a house once he is back from his deployment. He does have the original invoice for the car too so that it is easy to know what comes with the car.

I have been told in the past that rare color combos up the value too. It is white with a blue interior and from what I gather blue interiors were rare on Bosses.

I'll keep you posted on updates and I will listen to all offers from anyone interested.
