Passenger side firewall items on a '66 Mustang... well, there's the fan motor, and the fan resistor inside the air box on that side.

On a V8 and I6, the starter's over near there.

The ground might be on that side too, but I kind of doubt that'd be it...

On an I6, the carb is on that side, as is the air tube, but it's such a solid piece that unless there was a serious amount of pressure, it's unlikely that would let go... perhaps the plug on the end let go? That would, if it got pushed out, make the sound and make a burnt smell, maybe... But I sort of doubt that it would pop out, being as the engine is negatively pressurizing that tube. And if it did somehow backfire and pop out, the car would run like crap, seriously leaned out. So that's not it. Sorry. Forget I said that...

On a v8, the spark plugs and exhaust are on that side near there, so it's possible one of those could be your culprit.

Um... can't think of much else that'd go pop and also smell... If I do I'll let ya know, but the thing is, perhaps you need to get in the engine compartment, under the car, and under the dash and find it?

And howdy! Welcome to the madhouse!
