66 Will crank, but not start!

I thought I was finally done with the restoration and tried firing the 66 up today. She would crank and want to stat but would not turn over. I am by no means a mechanic and everything I know is thanks to google and this forum. I'm tired and at my wits end, any help would be great!!

Cool

What do you mean by saying it would crank but not turnover ? I am thinking you meant that it would turnover but not start. I would suggest you pour about a half a shot glass of gasoline into the primary side of the carb , place the air cleaner back on the carb and turn the starter switch on and see if the engine will start. If the engine starts but does not continue to run, you may have a bad fuel pump, plugged fuel filter, or the fuel line is not connected correctly to the fuel pump. If the engine still does not fire, you may not be getting spark.

Just spray carb cleaner on the carb and then try to turn the key. It's an old trick, and a little safer then pouring gas in the carb. If it still doesn't start then check fuel system and spark

I think I might not be getting enough volts from the battery now, since I was repeatedly trying to start the car with the solenoid wires crossed ( yeah, I'm an idiot ). Since I don't have a charger could I try jumping the battery? The starter is making noise every time I try to start it now.

So I jumped the mustang and she fired right up!!!! I now have a leak by the thermostat and the throttle needs to be adjusted badly. I thought she was going to take off she was running so fast. So if anyone has a good link on how to adjust that I would greatly appreciate it!

Make sure the throttle return spring is connected and not rusted away. There is also an idle speed screw that holds the throttle plate open just a little (at the base of the carb, not the choke plate on top). If you look closely at the linkage on the carb, you'll figure out which one it is. That could be your problem. Post a pic of your linkage and we can tell if their is any adjustment there.

It has a Holley 4779 4 br, and I haven't been able to adjust the timing yet because she won't idle. She starts up and goes full bore.

Timing and carb adjustments go hand in hand. set the timing adjust the carb check the timing again. Check vacuum pressure also. Its a good way to set the air fuel screws
