66 fastback restomod project
66 fastback restomod project
Hi guys and gals
New to the forums here. Proud owner of a concourse 2 71 boss 351.
My next project is a 66 mustang fastback daily driver.
A friend sold me a 66 fastback with a title and not much else with the car. Complete project car. I've already restored a 66 fastback gt car to to original before.
I think I want a daily/summer driving car now.
My plan since I will be taking it completely apart to restore is mostly normal body with some mods to it. Maybe dropping the ride height down a bit, fiberglass or modded hood. Maybe some flares or massaging of the sheet metal in areas, not a show car standard car.
I'm going to swap suspension for cool overs in front, eliminating the shock towers, 4 wheel disc swap, upgraded suspension.
What I'm struggling with is interior and drivetrain options. I'm thinking a more comfortable interior, maybe a fox body type interior with racing seats or more comfortable seats for cruising. For drivetrain I'm thinking a fuel injected 5.4 or 4.6 with complete computer swap over. I'm thinking a 5 or 6 speed with 9 inch for drivetrain.
Anyone done this type of project or drivetrain swap before? i want the car to look good, not a thrown together jumble. I'm thinking if a donor car for engine and wiring, rather than crate motor and will do the rebuild myself.
Would I be looking at full custom interior or will another car work as donor material with light massaging to fit? Any helpful websites are welcome.
Thanks everyone.

The 4.6, apparently, will fit. Dunno about a 5.4. Googled '4.6 in a 1966 Mustang' and found a Car Craft article that will hopefully help ya out:

Now as far as the interior... Can't speak for the rear seats, as they're kind of special, but I put '88 Mustang GT seats in my '66 coupe, all four of 'em, and that was a *simple* swap. Hardest part was wiring up the electric lumbars.
The '66 seat rails almost literally bolt right on to the Fox seats. This means that *any* Fox (and probably the SN95 and S197 seats too) will almost bolt right up with the seat rails... provided they are not powered. Powered ones, you're going to have to do some modifying to get that to fit, as the motor's rack won't fit well in the '66.
Not that the back seats of a Fox hatch would work in the '66 Fastback, but in the coupe, they are almost made for that application. You just notch the pinchweld where the seat bottom will wedge in on a particular steel wire frame. The backs are you ensure you get all three brackets involved (left, right, and middle.) You flip the left and right brackets, drill holes, tap screws, and voila. Back seats are DONE.
Not that you'd copy me, but if that helps with any ideas, well, there ya go.
Sounds like a fun project! I vote Emberglo with Tan interior.
