65 Ignition Switch Removal HELP!
SO I take it you don't have the ignition key?
I'ts been a while since I worked on mine but I thought you could get the whole thing out of the dash without removing the key-switch unit. I'll have to look it up later tonight.
If that's the case, you should then be able to take the whole thing to a locksmith to remove the ignition switch unit from the bezel. Unless you think you can work with lock-picking tools yourself. That igntion key is pretty basic and should be a quick job for a compitent lock-smith. Nothing like today's ignition keys.

Your gonna need the key to pull the cylinder out of the switch, you have to turn it to "acc" and put a small pin in the hole in the lock cylinder to release it and then turn it even further back, I believe. The good news, if you don't mind reproduction parts, is that NAPA has a good replacement switch and cylinder for a reasonable price. I replaced mine recently, the actual switch wore out. BTW, I'm just going by memory, some of the steps might not be right, but having the key, or the ability to turn the lock, is right. ***If you need to take it to the locksmith this will usually work, a wire to the positive side of the coil from the battery will power up your ignition, then just jumper the starter solenoid to start it.*** p.s. Don't ask how and why I know this!!!

Well, its really kinda boring actully, my older brother taught me the trick when we first started working on my first 'stang ('66 coupe, also) and couldn't locate the keys. I later used it to "borrow" my buddies '66 coupe when he borrowed my car to go see his g/f and forgot to give me his keys. Thats why my current '66 has some minor changes in its ignition system, and some more planned. Of course, if someone wants your car badly enuf, they'll find a way to take it, I'm just trying to keep the honest people honest!! Oh, and yea, I like '66 coupes!!
