Too many variables to give any kind of suggestions. What carb, what intake, what gears, what elevation, what surface, what tires, 1/8 mile or 1/4 mile, what compression ratio, what cam? headers? equal legnth or non equal legnth. From your question I am guessing you have little experience. I am also guessing this is a first time adventure to the strip. This is assuming the word "track" means drag strip.

Why not just go, run the car, have some fun, if it does good fine if not who cares, just go have fun and see if you even like it or if you get on the staging and freak out. Dont expect this car to run 10 second times when in reality it could run 15' 16' or slower.
After that learn from it if you enjoy doing it. Then you can talk to others at your track and ask fro advice. No one on this forum can answer these questions without knowing your car and knowing your area.

One note I will add, most people who read your post, is going to come to the conclusion that daddy had alot of money and bought his bratty kid a car. And most car guys will not help out in that situation. This may or may not be the situation, but it does come across that way.

Please note I am not trying to be offensive or mean, just saying it as it is.

What size motor is it? If you havent already, step up to electronic ignition? Headers (long or shorties), exhaust setup? Rear gear- ratio, differential or limited slip, remember, Ford had several different rear ends. Going to run street tires or drag radials? Even having a K&N or other hi-flow filter element might help.
On a safety note, maybe getting a dual master cylinder and disc brakes.

I had to ask being your sig says "big_block" (Even though I know it takes at least a sledgehammer to even get a 351 into a stock 65-66 bay)
To get you a baseline I found this:
"As for straight-line performance, R&T's 210-horsepower 289/four-speed car did about what the editors expected: 0-60 mph in nine seconds (vs. 11.2 for an automatic 260), a standing quarter-mile of 16.5 at 80 mph, 110 mph all out, and 14-18 mpg."

Well, my advice is to get your son a helmet, even if the car runs in the 15's, and just go there and have FUN!! Take some tools to maybe tune it with, or if something breaks. Oh, and speaking about brakes, I'm echoing the upgrade to a dual master cylinder (I'm using one for a '69) and disc brakes, if you haven't already. BTW, I'm going to the track here in MI tomorrow, hopefully!!

Oh there shouldnt be anything to fear about the track. I would much rather have someone go racing at a track than on public streets. Oh and this may be a little late, but welcome to the forum!

Your best timing : first, disconnect the vacuum line and plug it . Then set your timing @ 32 degrees before TDC @ 3000 RPM -- 30 degrees is fine. I say 3000 RPM'S because by then , the mechanical advance is fully advanced. This is good for dragstrip duty . Leave the vacuum line plugged while at the strip . For the street , re-connect the vacuum line, and set the timing with the line connected to 36 degrees BTDC @ 3000 RPM'S. This gives best throttle response and good over-all gas mileage. The dragstrip setting gives you more high RPM torque if you have even modest rear gears ( 3.25 -- 3.73 ) and helps keep the wheel-spin to a minimum at the line. Drag slicks help too .
The carb setting : For a 289 with the stock 9.8/1 compression ratio, mild cam , ( stock street cam, or up to 220 degree duration @ .050 lift cam ) a 600 CFM is quite sufficient . You don't want a double pumper on the street, it gets too thirsty ! Gas is too high for that ! But a good vacuum secondary 4 BBL set right is great . But my favorite carb for the street is the Carter AFB 600 CFM 4 BBL with automatic choke . Out of the box, it is jetted nicely for your application . Just set the idle mixture after it warms up , set the idle speed and it's set -and-forget . Holly carbs are not so forgiving .They may perform a little better, but are always needing a little fine tuning. To me , the AFB is the way to go . To set a carb : warm up the engine to operation temp . Set RPM's 150 RPM's below factory recommended setting and adjust idle mixture screws to highest RPM , ( first turn in, if it drops, turn out to highest RPM and stop ). Then set idle RPM as per recommendation . But MAKE SURE THE CHOKE IS WIDE OPEN before any adjustments Other than that, just enjoy it ! Red Pony .
