I have a 66 coupe with the 6cyl engine and I plan on putting a V8 in her within the next 5 years. I wanted something that would produce 300hp and someday be able to slap a supercharger of it. I wanted some input on that all of you think would be a good engine. I thought about a 289 with 302 heads but would I be able to stroke it out the 300hp? What would the 289 w/ 302 heads produce hp wise? Need some input! And Yes I do plan on doing things right. With the 8 inch rear end, front 5 lug spindles, front disc brakes, V8 suspension, the works!

Also I have a C4 automatic tranny with the bellhousing fit a 289 or 302 engine? Will that trans. hold up to the power of that kind of engine?

Just needed some input.

Thanks

Jeff

what i would do is get a 289 and do the shelby stuff to it. but if i had the money i would get tri-Y headers, cobra dual 4 intake, two 600 cfm edlbrock carbs, forged internals and a cam.i'd say that would push out more than 300HP.

Your plans sound similar to my setup. It was originally a 289, now stroked to 302 cubes. The heads are ported, and a Crane cam replaces the OEM unit. It has an Edelbrock Performer 289 intake manifold and 600 CFM Edelbrock carb. Headers and a high-flow air filter round out the package. It's never seen a dyno, but I'm pretty sure it's making a little over 300 horses at the crank.

As for the transmission Q's, sorry. Someone else here will def. know, though. Good luck with your project.

I would invest in an AOD or T-5 transmission

You might as well start with a 302 if you want lots of power...why not a 5.0L setup?

well it all depends on how much money you want to put into the engine.
