alright...here is the question.

I think this is the summer I finally do the conversion. I've eliminated the possibility of an S197 for the near future because I got the Mariner, so now I can focus on the '65 full time. What do you guys think? The four speed will be more nostalgic and period correct, but the 5 speed should provide better perfomace and gas milage, allowing me to be more agreesive in my gear setup if I choose to do that too. I think the four speed would also be more "sought-after" should I ever sell it over the latemadel t5... I'm trying to get my ducks in a row so I can submit my budget/plan to the wife for approval. If anyone has been through this before, share what you learned please.


down the road...I may add a "old style" paxton, or a roots type blower...so I guess keep that possibility in mind...maybe I should just keep the auto and go for the s/c?

More gears are better in my book. I say 6 speed but 5 will do. You could also do the 4 speed and go with something like this farther on down the road.
Do you tend to take longer or shorter cruises?

 

shorter trips....the reason I left a 6-speed out of the equation is becuase they are so big that there are some pretty involved modifications that need to be made for it to fit...I dont feel like getting into that.

Go with a 5-speed. First gear and second will rip your head off and fifth gear will make gas. I have a T-5 in my 1970 Mach 1 with a M-Code 351C-4V and have gotten 25 mpg crusing on the interstate at 60-65 mph. I still only get 12 mpg around town because I love winding out first too much as well as laying a little rubber in second instead of acting my age. Man, I love what you can get away with when your hair turns gray and you wear bi-focals.

a 5 speed would be fun, If you were going to swap trannies I would lean towards that for practicality (though I miss my old 4 speed though, that was fun :P)

But I really thing the supercharger is the way to go here After all, this isn't a DD is it?

 

not a daily driver...but I drive it a lot in the summer...I'm beginning to think that a supercharged mustang may be cooler than a manual mustang...I wish I had the money to do both...

Heck the roots is cool too, but that one is going to be harder to fit under the hood

 

I have had a few blown cars mostly 6-71 to 8-71 roots style and to be honest if I had to choose and still drive the car I would go for the manual transmission IMO. The Manual transmission is going to be more reliable and more fuel effiecent and more fun on a day to day summer basis.

I'm thinking seeing how you make mostly short trips to go with the 4speed. Is there a cost diff between the 4 and 5 speed set up?

I would guess the 4 speed would be a little cheaper...but probably not by much...porbably just the cost of the transmission itself.

 

well, that and clutch assy and a few other odds and ends. but the 5 speed would need that too so its not that big of a deal.

superchargers don't need clutches though

The supercharger will be the most expensive I think...but I might as well go big or go home, right?....maybe once we sell the house my wife will let me have some more spending money.

 

I suppose your house deal is probably more important than a supercharger....

A blower would be hands down more expensive than a tranny swap, especially in an older car like yours. A tranny swap is much less involved with the older cars.
