1968 fastback - add'l info/pics
Ok, I know I already posted two pics, but here is the additional info. about this car and additional pics that some have asked for. I'm always open to advice and opinions form fellow TMS'ers. Here is the exact post I put on the International Mustang Bullitt Owners Club (IMBOC) site:
I just purchased a 1968 fastback. It's a J code, GT, origionally highland green, no power steering, brakes and no a/c. It has a four speed manual transmission and the 302 it came with was replaced with a 289. The interior is all new and looks like it just came from the factory. The exterior is a shade of highland green, but not the exact color I eventually want. The previous owner had a gray "C" stripe painted on and he added locking hood pins which I hate. It also has a longer than stock rear leaf spring shackle and traction bars. OEM shackles are on the way and the traction bars are coming off this week. Overall it is a very clean, straight car. The 289 suprised me. It was a lot stronger than I thought. It does have the right wheels, but I'm going to use the Eastwood paint and go with a dark charcoal color for the spokes. I sort of want to restomod this car without jeopardizing the exterior and interior of the original car. Here are some pics.

Congrats!
Here are a few unsolicited ideas but they might help.
You might like to consider disc brakes all around although the rotors would be small if those wheels are kept. Electronic ignition would good, if it doesn't have it already. Upgrading the radiator is must, again, if it has not been done already.

Discs all around isn't necessary unless you are racing, I would say just front discs. Neither is upgrading the radiator unless overheating problems. I would recommend electronic ignition though.

Congrats -
I had an early 68 289 like you and the car was a blast. Since you plan on painting it I would suggest the following to go with the bullitt theme and update the car a little. (okay this is what I wanted to do to my 68)
I had an early 68 289 like you and the car was a blast. Since you plan on painting it I would suggest the following to go with the bullitt theme and update the car a little. (okay this is what I wanted to do to my 68)
- Black taillight panel (Like the original bullitt)
- Standard rear valance (Like the original bullitt - never liked cutouts)
- Remove those fogs (looks meaner and goes with the bullitt theme)
- Front disc brakes
- Either 67 deluxe (like Shelby and closer to S197) or 68 deluxe dash panels (woodgrain).
- If you are not worried about it being 100% original inside get the 67 deluxe door panels. I have no clue what they were thinking on the 68. There's also a company making woodgrain inserts for the 67 panels so they match the 68 deluxe better.
- Upper console with map lights
- Hydraulic clutch retrofit
- Lacarra Steering wheel
- Vintage-air A/C but with 67 or 68 vents (the VA ones look like crap) you can even get the VA kit to work with the 67/68 original AC controls.
- Update headlights to newer lenses or at minimal add a relay to the system
Thanks for the extra pics... you know.. the c stripe is a good excuse to get it repainted.!
Love this whole car and your great update ideas! But OMG is that giant shifter for real? It looks as if it came out of a 10 ton gravel truck? I had a Hurst 4-speed shifter back in the 70's and it was about half that size. CalStang

Well you know what they say about guys with big shifters...................no, wait......story for another time. Anyway, I thought it was pretty big too. I'm hoping to go with a five speed eventually and hopefully change the shifter then.
Very nice car. I love what you have in mind for it. I had a very large B&M ratchet shifter in my 69 when I bought it. It was a real knuckle basher too. Just ask SVOPaul
I had him put a stock one in it but I plan on changing to a 5 or 6 speed standard. At that point I'll probably go with a hurst short throw shifter.

Yessir, Here's the link to my other thread. I'll be posting a bunch of updated pics on the other thread here in a few days. There's been lots of progress.
