Well I've started tearing down my 68 fastback as I get it ready for media blasting. I'm disassembling it myself then it's off to Classic Recreations in Yukon, Ok for media blasting, body work, and paint. Here are some before pics of the car when I purchased it and here is the beginning of the tear down. I'll post progress pics as I can.

I'll post pics as I get them. To answer a few questions, it is a 289 and the car is very solid. I'm finding little to no rust on any vital areas. There are bound to be surprises though.....there always are on a restoration. The car was in really good shape, but the guy who had it before me painted the car in his garage........need I say more???? At this time I'm planning on upgrading to at least a 302 and maybe go with a 390 motor. This is a j-code and was an original highland green car. Somewhere along the way someone replaced the 302 with the 289. Its going to be somewhat of a restomod. I'm going to put an EFi kit on it, but it will look like a stock 4bbl carb. I may go with a more modern front suspension with a rack and pinion. It's going to look stock on the outside and in the interior.......the "restomod" upgrades will be minimal and hardly noticeable.

 

Sounds like an awesome project.

 

Will it be restored to 1968 factory stock or restomod, such as upgrading the suspension, 5 or 6-spd, power steering, electronic ignition, radiator, perhaps A/C?

Edit: I just read your last post and part of my quandary was answered.

 

With the J code, you almost have to go with the 302 to keep it classic.

But...

That S code 390 was a wonderful engine.

 

When I had mine restored in 2001 the engine was replaced with a 302 from FRPP. I believe it was rated at somewhere around 340/310 with 30 or 40 pounds less than the original engine and its price was under $3,500. IT was paired with a Holley 650 carburetor. It turned out to be more responsive than the original setup.

 

I'm going to upgrade the front suspension and go with a manual rack and pinion.......going to keep it manual steering. I'm going to add front disc brakes, and I'm going with an EFI, I'm thinking the Powerjection III. It looks like a 4bbl carb and the air cleaner will hide it anyway. It will maintain a stock appearance.

My goal is to keep it as stock looking as possible, but with a moden suspension, EFI, and LED tail lights and reverse lights.

I ordered the one with out the overhead console.

 

I made the mistake of going with America Racing Torq Thrust 15" wheels thus limiting the front rotors to 10". Had I gone with '01 Bullitt 17" wheels the options would have been better all around.

 

Here are some updated pics. I finally got to concentrate on the interior. I only have the dash and gauges left to remove from the inside of the car. I got some help from my oldest son, which was cool. The only things I have besides the interior is to take off the exhaust and remove the gas tank. Classic Recreations will remove the rest and get it ready for media blasting.

 

The guys from Classic Recreations came and picked up the 68 today. Here it is as they took it away. They will tear it down the rest of the way and get it ready for media blasting.

 

Not pulling the engine, or are they doing this step?

 

They are going to pull it for me. They will also remove the glass and front suspension and rear end.
