I have a 1966 Mustang Coupe and when I hit a fairly large bump it "bottoms out", makes a clanking noise like it is dragging bottom but it is not hitting the ground. Have any of you had this problem and what is the soluation?
Can you tell if it's front or rear? You have no scrapes on the bottom of the car? You might have worn out bushings in the front, rear, or both. There are bump stops in front and rear, are they in place?
Can anyone help my 65 mustang front driver side fender bottoms out and rubs against my tire when I hit a bump any ideas of what exactly it could be I was thinking the shock but im not sure

Welcome,
Some Side Shots of Both Front Wheels Facing Straight Ahead would Be a Good Start. After That Some Shots of the Suspension With Wheel Removed Will Likely Be Needed to Come Up With a Good answer!

I Check in From Time To Time! We Will See What We Can Figure Out!
You Are Welcome For the Help.
Your Suspension and Wheelhouse are Very Similar to My Daughters 67 Fairlane Which I Have Worked on Many Times and Have Replaced Spring Seats on Myself. So I Got a Good Feel For What You Are Working On!

From What I Can See at the Very Least The Spring Saddles are Shot. They Should Be Replaced. The Aftermarket Have Some With Bearings instead of Rubber Bushings Which Last Longer & Make The Car Handle Better. Just an FYI. You Can Use a Good Quality Rubber Style Of Course! Looks Like Upper Ball Joint Maybe Bad as Well. This is a Partial to Answer Question of Vehicle Being Lower on One Side. Also The Wheel Traveling Father Up Than Normal. I'm Surprised the Limiter Stopper is intact. Your Wheel & Tire Size Are At the Limit Likely and with worn Pieces and Things Moving Around You Got the Damage. Even Wheel Alignment Can Change Clearances when Things are At the Limit! Oh And Height Can Also Be Due to Missing or Worn Out Spring Insulator as Shown In First Link Below!
The Daughters Fairlane is Using a 14x6 Ford Magnum 500 With a P205/70/14 and Required a 1/4 Spacer So the Tire Would Not Contact the Upper Control Arm When Topped Out Like When The Car was Jacked Up The Middle of the Tire Sidewall Would Be Cut . Say if you Went over a Bridge Fast and The Front End Came up! Just Happened to Catch That Issue While Under The Car Working on it. On Stands the Wheel Turned Fine But on the Jack They Rubbed. Also We Had to remove Wheel Opening Moulding For Clearance as it would Rub Tire on Turns. You Have to Allow for Wheel Travel When Turning as well When Using a Larger Wheel & Tire Combo!
Now From this Picture if it Were My Car I Would Pressure Wash The Entire Under Carriage & Inspect Everything. Looks Like a Lot of Miles have Passed since this Car Has Had Attention Underneath. I Would Be Concerned With All Suspension Pieces and All Braking Items Including Steel & Rubber Lines. It's Just a Matter of Time Before a Failure Which Could be Deadly. I Know it's a Spendy Job and The Old Ram Style Power Steering Loves to Leak Fluid all over the Suspension and Turn The Pieces To Goo! Hate To Be The Bearer of Bad News But Don't Want to See anybody get Hurt! I Know after an Cleaning and Inspection More Items Will Be Found Bad. I Would Compare Spring Height When Saddles are Replaced and if Not Equal Front Springs should Be Replaced! Shocks Maybe Ok and BTW on these Old Style Shocks They Strictly Dampen the Ride And Do Not Effect Ride Height. I Put KONI Shocks All around on the Fairlane & Like Em as an FYI!
