derek there was never any mustang listed as a 1964...they were all considered 65 so the first number in the vin means nothing.

But if it is a fastback it is a 1965 cuase 1964.5 only cam in notch and vert.

if its not a fastback then an easy one to look to see if the car has a generator instead of alternator...if someone switched to on the engine the dash should at least still ahve the light that says gen instead of alt.

It's a "64-1/2". Technically, they're all "65's", but the early generator equipped cars are commonly referred to as 64-1/2...

You can determine 64-1/2 vs 65 by looking at the VIN.

Look at the 2nd digit - that's the plant code. Then look at the last 6 numbers, that's your consecutive number.

For a plant code of "F" (Dearborn), anything with a consecutive # below 250000 is a 64-1/2, anything above is a 65.

For a plant code of "R" (San Jose), anything with a consecutive # below 125000 is a 64-1/2, anything above is a 65.

For a plant code of "T" (Metuchen), they were ALL 65's, as they didn't begin production until later in the year.

By looking at the vin you have a vert as that is what the 08 means. The F after the 08 must mean it has or originally had a 260ci V8 with a 2 bbl carb.

Engine code

More than anything the engine code, fifth digit of the VIN, tells what you have.
Only K engine codes where the same in "64.5's"
So the F code 260 indicates it is definitely 64.5.
260's were only in 64.5's, where D code was 289.
