Ford Teases New WWII-inspired RTR Mustang GT
‘RAF Eagle Squadron’ Mustang GT is Ford’s latest charity-benefit build that’s up for bid in Wisconsin July 26.
The lineage between Ford’s Mustang and the legendary American P-51 fighter plane is something the brand rightfully celebrates every chance it gets. What most people may not be aware of, outside of World War II buffs, is that many American pilots also served in England’s Royal Airforce (RAF) Eagle Squadrons prior to the United States’ involvement in WWII in 1941. Thus, Ford is teaming up once again with Drift Champion Vaughn Gittin Jr. and his company, RTR vehicles, to create a special Mustang to honor that effort.
Gittin Jr. will showcase the one-of-a-kind RTR Mustang at this year’s Goodwood Festival of Speed in the United Kingdom July 12 to 15. Once it’s finished saluting an important slice of American/British history, it will head back to Oshkosh, Wisconsin, where it’ll be raffled off at the Experimental Aircraft Association (EAA) AirVenture Oshkosh fly-in on July 26.
Fittingly, Royal Air Force livery adorns the Eagle Squadron Mustang, along with a full complement of RTR catalog parts. Unfortunately, Ford graced us with but one teaser pic. But we can at least spot the obvious wide body kit. The special Mustang also sports a Ford Performance supercharger under the hood. That, along with other unknown mods, helps boost output from the factory 5.0-liter to 700 horsepower.
Ford’s ‘Military’ Mustang History
Ford’s Eagle Squadron ‘Stang is the 11th custom vehicle they’ve donated to the organization. It follows right on the heels of the 2016’s “Ole Yeller” GT (pictured above) and last year’s 2015’s Apollo Edition ‘Stang (pictured below). Both of which help further the non-profit’s aim to educate young folks in amateur aviation.
In all, the Blue Oval has raised more than $3 million for the charity, but by the early looks of things, this aviation-theme ‘Stang might be the coolest one yet. Let us know what you think in the forums.
