Ford Sets Largest Parade World Record–Again–with a Ton of Mustangs!

Blue Oval managed to rally 1,326 Mustangs in the pony car hot bed of Belgium.

Way back on December 3, 2017, Ford managed to conjure up an astounding 960 Mustangs in Toluca, Mexico, which set a new world record for the largest number of pony cars in a parade. And now, not even two years later, they’ve smashed their own record. A whopping 1,326 Mustangs came from all over Europe to descend upon Ford’s Lommel Proving Ground in Belgium recently in one seriously amazing effort.

The lineup, as you might imagine, included every single generation of Mustang produced. And there were many, many examples of each. Those thousand-plus cars were driven in an uninterrupted convoy with no more than 20 meters (65 or so feet, for us Americans) between each car. Those same vehicles and drivers also participated in a choreography to celebrate the Mustang’s 55th anniversary this year. The special event also featured a P51 Mustang fly-over that was a sight to behold.

You might ask why Ford would choose Belgium for this record-breaking feat. Well, turns out, more Mustangs are sold in Belgium per person than any other country in Europe. Which made Ford’s Lommel Proving Ground the ideal location for the world record attempt. Mustang was the world’s best-selling sports coupe for the fourth year in a row in 2018. Sales continued to rise in the first half of 2019, which saw 5,500 units sold in Europe. That’s a 3.7 percent increase compared to the same period last year.

Ford’s Lommel Proving Ground is where the company refines the sustainability, technology, and driving dynamics of its vehicles in Europe. The facility covers a massive piece of land and features 50 miles of track. Some of which is designed to simulate public roads. Other tracks feature differing road surfaces which enable engineers to evaluate handling, braking, ride, and comfort. More than 100 staff members from the facility volunteered to help Ford’s world record-breaking attempt run smoothly.

This feat was no doubt impressive, of course. But somehow, we have this feeling that the record won’t stand for long. If the past is any indication, we’re betting Ford will give it another go in a year or two. May we suggest next year’s Woodward Dream Cruise as a potential venue?
