Barton Shift Bracket Installed w/Stock Shifter

already posted on AFM but thought I would also post here.

The wife got me the barton bracket for my bday this weekend and I installed it last night.

Not a lot of room to work down there due to the drive shaft being all up in your business. got it without too much trouble though. About 45 minutes to install.

I think first I should explain exactly what it is that this piece does since I've yet to read a plain english explanation.

The shifter housing, as most of us know, is not attached direct to the transmission. It's a floating unit.

The back of the shifter assembly has about a 1/2" metal stud coming out of the back that is cradled in the shifter bracket that is mounted to the underside of the car. This bracket keeps the shifter unit in place but due to the design of the stock shifter bracket, it allows the entire shifter assembly to wiggle around due to the bracket not having a firm tight grip on the stud coming out of the back of the shifter bracket.

The Barton and joe heck brackets essentially eliminate ANY of this movement in the shifter assembly by using a firm polyurethane bushing that the stud rests in. It's just firm enough to absorb unwanted vibrations from the transmission but firm enough that the shifter housing can't move around any more.

So THAT'S what this thing does and it's easy to see why it makes such a big difference when you're under the car and can wiggle the whole shifter assembly around when the stock unit is in place.

After installing the bracket, the first thing I noticed was that the 1-2 shift is no longer an unpleasant clunk into gear. I should probably preface this by saying that I only have about 800 miles on the car and have not had any grinding issues at all so I cannot comment on whether or not it will eliminate grinding. For me however, it did make the 1-2 shift much more crisp and smooth.

The shift is still more notchy than any other gear selection but it's no longer an UNCOMFORTABLE feeling notchy.

2-3 engagement is nice and smooth and much more sure feeling.

So yeah. I would say the Barton and JHR brackets are WELL worth the money and time to install them, whichever one you choose. I may be in the minority here but I actually really like the stock shifter. I haven't driven a car with the aftermarket units but the stock shifter isn't exactly making me hate it.

Until I see the MGW and hear some feedback from users, I'm sticking with the stock shifter.

I also have a Barton bracket for my stock shifter, haven't installed it yet. Wanted it to do just what you described. Nice fix. Thanks for posting!
