Always used full synthetic with the exception of the oil it came from with Ford initially in that truck, so I follow what has worked into the Mustang. Currently have 57K on it.
What oil filters are you using with your 10k intervals?

The FoMoCo one. It came from the factory with it, and is part of the equasion that Ford said can go 10K.

In the oil filter rating sites, they rank it good (however, now I'll start using the Mobil 1 filters if they are part of an oil buy special at Autozone).

Like yourself, I usually hit up Autozone for the oil. They send me coupon books about every other month that have a $5.00/$10.00 off total purchase based on total amount. So, they usually have the Mobil 1 synthetic (not always the extended performance) that I'll buy. Sometimes it's Penzoil full synthetic. With the Mobil 1, they usually include the oil filter in there special, but until now, I could not find a Mobil 1 filter listed for the Mustang, and would buy the Ford Motorcraft (500), and select a Mobil 1 filter for my son's Subaru. Now I can utilize the Mobil 1 filter, and have my son buy his own!

Advance Auto constantly has great oil change specials too. Usually about $32 for 5 quarts of Castrol Edge w/ Syntec (their regular synthetic, plain old Edge is their extended one) and a K&N or Purolator PureOne filter.

They also had a good online purchase coupon a few months back so I bought 4 K&N filters to stock up, and go to Walmart for the oil now, where it's only $24 for 5 quarts of the same Castrol.

Good to know. I went into an Autozone many moons ago, and signed up to be some sort of "valued member". Got this cool plastic key fob thing, and a large plastic paint type bucket with their logo on it that I use as the wash bucket. I also have a Advance Auto near me, along with Pep Boys. I guess I'll have to check out if they have the membership thingy going on to where they will send me coupons for discounts.

However, I'm starting to sway to the thought of having the Mobil oil change centers doing my oil changes in my old life. If they use the newfound oil filter that has been mentioned here, then that could be the final thing to swing me over. I like workiing on the Mustang, but the oil change part, well, that's sort of a pain now with that horizontal filter. Yes, I used the baggie trick, and 95% of the time it works, but every once in awhile, I spill some oil off. Then I have to clean it up.

I have a new 2013 GT with 1025 miles. I can't find the drain plug torque in the owners manual. Is the Ford oil filter a must? I did the pre pay maintance and the dealer said 5K or 5 months. Holds 8 quarts with or without filter? Do you jack it up and put blocks under the tires to get to everything? Is there a video on this site somewhere that shows how to change the oil. I intend to change it with synthetic every 2 to 3 thousand miles. Thanks Rick This is my first Mustang

Drain plug torque is 26 ft-lbs. Plastic cover bolts are 79 inch-lbs. Holds a touch over 8 qts with the filter. Once you have the car raised there isn't much to it. Remove the bolts for the plastic cover, allowing it to swing down out of the way. Oil filter and drain plug are readily accessible at this point.

To get access you can either get ramps or use a hydraulic jack and jack stands. If you use a hydraulic jack consider getting these to save your pinch welds:
Magnetic Jack Pads

It's your call on when to change, but honestly at 3,000 miles you are just throwing money down the drain. These engines have an 8pt oil pan specifically so you can go up to 10,000 miles between changes. Especially if you're going to use full synthetic. Best thing to do is follow the Oil Life Monitor your car has, your owners manual will tell you exactly this.

Ford oil filter is not a must, but I do buy the Motorcraft one because it's reasonably priced and can be found at most auto parts stores. If I had to buy from a Ford dealer and pay their markup I would use another brand.

I've sent my own oil (Pennzoil Ultra) in to Blackstone for testing after 10,000 miles, and they came back and said it was not only still clean, it was still good for at least another 6,000 miles. With good filters and good fully synthetic oil the 10,000 mile oil change interval is actually quite conservative. If Ford had mandated a synthetic mesh filter and high quality synthetic oil from the start they probably could have gone with a 15,000 mile oil change interval rather than just 10,000 and still not run into any significant problems.
Can you post up the report from the lab you sent your sample to? I'd like to see their 16k mile reasoning.

I have a 14 GT track pack. I'm about to do my first oil change and I have heard that the TP takes 8.5 qts vs the GT that takes 8 qts. But when I looked in the book it said both take 8 qts. What is the rt answer?

Here's the two oil change reports I've gotten from Blackstone so far:

Thanks for posting the reports, good to see the 5w20 is holding up nicely. I am anxious to see how my car did with the 5w50 and some track miles on M1. Got the containers last night, should be sending out later this week

Cool, I like the personalization of the report. Been meaning to get a sample tested. Test kit on the way now.

Awesome posting of the report. If I could only read it. You need to be a chemist to understand what the report reads. Lmao. I have no idea what the report means and its numbers. Lol

I've had great luck with it, and it's reasonably priced. Advance Auto constantly has $31.99 specials that get you 5 quarts + a Purolator PureOne filter, which is a good one. And if you don't want that, Walmart has 5 quart containers for $24.99, which is cheap too.

Yep, I like the personalization a lot too. I don't understand what each number means either, but the personalization helps it all make sense. Wheelman, here's a great example of how useful the reports can be. My wife and I bought a used 2008 Mazda3 for her back in April. The previous owner never drove it (only had 35K on it) but took crap care of it too, so I sent in an oil sample to them. Their suggestion was to change it again after about 1,000, then again after about 3,000, because of the high amount of metals seen in the first sample, which could be indicators of piston scuffing. If you look at all four of these, you'll see how much better the car has gotten, alleviating my worries about the motor potentially having issues.
