Cobra Clone Fox Body Drag Car Is Looking for a New Home
While it isn’t a true Cobra, this snake look-alike still packs plenty of bite with a fully built and procharged engine and a track-ready roll cage.
You want to go fast, right? We absolutely get it. Not everyone has the funding or time to build an all-out drag car, though. It’s time we put an end to the stigma against the “bought, not built” crowd. Professional racing drivers drive cars they didn’t build every single day. Besides, if you total up the cost of a build like this Cobra clone Foxbody, there’s a good chance what you can buy it for is a small fraction of the original build cost.
Listed on Craiglist in Los Angeles is this 1992 Ford Mustang LX hatchback. Externally, it looks pretty tame. The cowl induction hood and Cobra body kits don’t give too much away. Under the hood, you’ll find that this car is ready to make anyone who can handle it a track day hero. While it isn’t exactly what we’d call cheap, the $24,000 asking price seems pretty reasonable for what you get.
The World Products Man O War block alone is $2,600. This one hosts a set of AFR 185cc heads and an Anderson camshaft. Inside you’ll find a set of KB rods and JE pistons. This engine is ready for a forced induction fiesta, and that’s precisely what its got.
The oil-fed Procharger forces air through a three-core intercooler before shoving it down a Holley Systemax intake manifold set. Keeping up with all this extra air is a set of 80-pound injectors and an Anderson PMS that allows live data output through your PC. Clearly, no expense was spared in making this thing a force to be reckoned with. This all translates into a mountain of horsepower. Though, the power is as only as good as what is putting it to the ground, right?
Enough grip to cause whiplash.
Luckily, this car has the tools to put this power down with fearsome haste. A built Powerglide transmission shoots the power to a built rear end, transferring all those glorious ponies to a set of Weld Racing 15×10 inch Beadlock wheels wrapped in some aggressive racing slicks. Make no mistake; your head will feel the seat when this Fox takes off.
Also aiding in the launch is a rear Coilover conversion, making wheel hop a thing of the past. The front suspension is also converted to a true Coilover setup. Even further assistance in stiffening the chassis comes from a TORK bar and subframe connectors. This thing will jump away from the line faster than you can blink.
Completing the drag car vibes is a pair of Corbeau racing seats and harnesses encased in a six-point roll cage. All it needs now is for someone to drive it.
The seller states that he doesn’t have time to enjoy it and would rather another Mustang enthusiast get a chance to give it the track time it deserves. We find that quite respectable. All said and done, $24,000 is a pretty reasonable price for a turnkey drag car. Here’s hoping someone picks it up soon and makes some lightning-quick passes at their local drag strip.
