Mustang Cobra Jet 1400 Makes 1,500 Horsepower, Runs Low 8s in Quarter-mile
Ford’s Mustang Cobra Jet 1400 makes its public debut with some seriously amazing statistics and more in the tank.
Despite the many obvious benefits of electric power, most automotive enthusiasts continue to shun it in favor of internal-combustion engines. We know this because, well, we feel the same way. But Ford is clearly on a mission to prove that electric power is the future of performance. First, it created the insane Mustang Mach-E 1400. Now, it has unleashed the Mustang Cobra Jet 1400, which is one seriously powerful, seriously quick quarter-mile maven.
Ford introduced the Mustang Cobra Jet 1400 earlier this year, but we had yet to see it in the flesh. Now, the car made its official public debut at the NHRA U.S. Nationals this past weekend. Ford also used this moment to reveal the final specs of the Cobra Jet 1400, and they’re undoubtedly impressive. In private testing, the car make a whopping 1,502 horsepower and ran the quarter-mile in 8.27 seconds at 168 miles-per-hour.
Ford teamed up with Cascadia Motion to develop the electrified Cobra Jet’s powertrain, which consists of four PN-250-DZR inverters coupled to a pair of DS-250-115s, giving it four motors in total. Those motors spin up to 10,000 revolutions per minute, run at 800 volts and up to 700 amps, with a maximum output of 350kW per motor.
As one might imagine, this massive amount of power required Ford and partner AEM-EV to come up with some innovative solutions to manage it and put it to the ground. The Mustang Cobra Jet 1400 runs an advanced data and control system that features a control algorithm unique to the car. Ford also teamed up with MLe and longtime Cobra Jet collaborators Watson to tune the chassis.
The result of all that work is one seriously impressive machine, both from a raw and engineering standpoint. But as amazing as this car is, Ford seems certain that it has even more to offer with a little more tweaking.
“Since revealing the car, we’ve continued to fine-tune it and now know we’re just scratching the surface of what we may be able to achieve with this much electric horsepower in a drag racing setting,” said Mark Rushbrook, global director, Ford Performance Motorsports.
Dare we say a 7-second pass is in the Cobra Jet 1400’s future? At this point, it certainly seems possible. And if anyone doubted the performance potential of electric power before, we doubt they will after seeing this thing scream down the quarter-mile.
