California Dealer Marks Up 2020 GT500 to Mind-boggling Heights
DCH Ford of Thousand Oaks taps into demand for hardcore Shelby GT500, slaps nearly $100,000 on top of $73,995 MSRP.
The rule of supply and demand dictates that the more supply you have, the more you’ll fulfill everyone’s wishes, only to see demand fall by the wayside. If you have only a small handful of offerings to sell, though, demand will skyrocket, meaning you can charge more for the goods. That lesson is not lost on DCH Ford of Thousand Oaks in Thousand Oaks, California, just northwest of Los Angeles. The 2020 Shelby GT500 is quite the hot commodity, even with its $73,995 price tag.
The dealership, though, decided to make it even hotter, not through upgrades and mods, but by jacking up the price to “nosebleed section” heights.
The example on offer by DCH Ford, which is a Shadow Black-on-Ebony machine with the 5.2-liter supercharged V8 and seven-speed automatic, can be had for $169,999! That’s right: the dealer wants an additional $96,004 on top of what Autoblog says is a stripper model.
For comparison, a fully kitted-out GT500 will set one back $106,685 before taxes and other fees. For that price, the owner receives the $18,500 Carbon Fiber Track Pack, the $495 Twister Orange paint, the $695 black-painted roof, and painted stripes worth $10,000. When compared to the one DCH Ford is selling, which one would you rather have for that amount of scratch: a base GT500, or the ultimate version of it?
DCH Ford isn’t the only one to drop a huge markup on the monster GT500. Ford Authority reported a while ago Koons Ford of Sterling, Virginia had a GT500 Track Pack available for $145,890. This example is in Ford Performance Blue, comes with the Carbon Fiber Track Pack, and has the painted stripes. At least the markup somewhat matches the car’s specs, though that’s still a price to pay.
Thankfully, most other dealers aren’t going nuts with the markups, adding just a few thousand to the GT500’s various MSRPs, giving potential owners better choices in finding the fire-breathing stallion of their dreams. But as long as there are choice rides to be had, there will be a dealership capable of only seeing dollar signs in their eyes.
