Shelby GT500 Pair Damaged After Car Carrier Crashes in Detroit

By -

Imagine being the Ford rep tasked with calling both owners of these GT500 Mustangs and trying to explain it.

Right now, lots of eager (and lucky) folks are taking delivery of their shiny new 2020 Shelby GT500. But sadly, it looks like two of them are going to get a rather awkward phone call, if they haven’t already. Because this aerial footage from Channel 4 Detroit shows a cringe worthy scene following an accident that happened on I-75 in Detroit recently. Apparently, a truck pulling a car carrier flipped on its side while hauling the two cars.

Fox 2 News was first on the scene reporting on the accident, which resulted in the closure of all northbound lanes for several hours. Apparently, the driver of the truck was trying to change lanes when he somehow flipped over on the exit ramp. Thankfully, no one was injured in the crash. But it’s pretty clear that the GT500 pair suffered some damage. As a certain famous TV character once said, somebody’s got some splainin’ to do.

From what we can see in the footage, the rearmost GT500 is a Grabber Lime car, which is quite obvious by the wheels and hood. The Iconic Silver car also appears to be a GT500, but it’s hard to see the hood as it’s crunched under the Super Duty that was hauling the pair. But if you zoom in closely, you can in fact see it. Luckily, at least both cars appear to have been strapped down rather well. If not, this incident could have been much worse.

How exactly this crash happened is still pretty unclear. But you can see that the GT500 pair were both riding pretty far forward, which isn’t ideal for weight distribution. Perhaps there was another car behind them that was dropped off prior to the crash. Either way, we certainly don’t envy the person that has to make those dreaded phone calls to the unlucky owners of both cars. Especially since they’ve probably been waiting for them for months.

On the bright side, you’ll probably see both pop up at a salvage auction soon. So perhaps one or both cars will ultimately wind up on somebody’s YouTube channel. Perhaps getting rebuilt for pennies on the dollar. But for now, only time will tell what sort of fate awaits these two poor Shelbys. On the bright side, at least we can say that it wasn’t an owner that wrecked the first 2020 GT500!
