Shelby Cobra Replica is a Fitting Tribute to a Legend

Backdraft Racing 1965 Shelby Cobra Replica

The best of both worlds—classic looks and performance meet modern handling and build quality.

Like many others, Backdraft Racing is in the business of building Shelby Cobra replicas. However, they’re not content to merely stamp out cookie-cutter fiberglass replicas that are more or less close copies of the legendary 427 Cobra. They decided to pay tribute to Carroll Shelby’s creation in a different way.

From mild to wild, Backdraft Racing is happy to build whatever your heart desires, just so long as it’s at least vaguely Cobra-shaped. We found this example while browsing through the Barrett-Jackson catalog for their Palm Beach 2018 sale.

Modern, Yet Classic

At first glance, it looks like a classic 1965 Shelby Cobra, but the similarities end there. Thoroughly modernized and updated, from the chassis itself to the choice of paint and trim, this Cobra replica is a 21st century take on the Shelby legend.

While nearly every Cobra replica aims to emulate the bulbous look of the 427 car, nearly all of them sport small-blocks. That’s not the case here, as this model has a real 427 motor nestled between the wide front fenders.

The similarities to the original’s drivetrain end there, however. Power makes its way through a five-speed manual transmission, backed up by an independent rear suspension. Four-wheel disc brakes handle the stopping duties.
