Cheap vs Expensive S550 Ford Mustang GT Build Off

These two S550 Ford Mustang GT models will be getting very different budgets, but the goal is to see which responds the best.

With the debut of the all-new S650 generation 2024 Ford Mustang, many have moved on to the latest and greatest pony car from the prior S550 generation model, which isn’t terribly surprising. The S650 has a lot to offer in terms of tech, specifically, not to mention the same great base for modifications as its predecessor as well. However, for those on a bit of a budget, that also means the S550 Ford Mustang GT makes for one heck of a bargain prospect in terms of bang for the buck.

That’s precisely why the folks behind the YouTube channel Donut recently decided to purchase two S550 Ford Mustang GT models and do two very different kinds of builds on each. One of these pony cars is going to be a budget build, and the team has set a goal of spending no more than $10,000 to make it as quick as possible.

It’ll be dong battle with the other S550 in this duo, which is going to receive the best parts that money can buy, fueled by an unlimited budget. The point of this exercise, as one might imagine, is to determine which of the two builds is the quickest at the drag strip once both are completed, which should be rather interesting – after all, as many of us are well aware, throwing more money at a project doesn’t always make it better.

The other interesting thing about this new S550 Ford Mustang GT build series is that Donut wants to figure out what aftermarket upgrades provide the best bang for your buck – as well as which ones aren’t worth the cost – so this should provide some valuable information in that regard, too. We’re already well aware of the potential that lies within this platform, but now that these cars are readably available for bargain prices, it makes the S550 a rather enticing project, regardless.

Before the build process begins, Donut took both of its pony cars to the drag strip for some baseline runs, and proceeded to beat its goal of running an 8.5-second eighth-mile in each. The future high dollar build ripped off an 8.435-second pass, while the budget Mustang managed a best time of 8.459 seconds – a rather close result, indeed. Now, both cars are set to enter the modification process to see how much time Donut can shave off, and we’ll certainly be following along to see how it goes.
