S550 Mustang Rips off 9-Second Passes, Destroys Camaro ZL1

By -

If anyone really ever doubted the potential of the 2018/2019 Mustang, this video should put it to rest.

By now, the world has to be aware what an awesome platform the 2018/2019 Mustang GT is. Transforming these third-gen Coyote-powered cars into 9-second track terrors is almost too easy. The formula? Pick your preferred method of forced induction, throw on some drag radials, install a return-style fuel system, and boom – you’ve got a ripper. Next thing you know, you’ll be taking down all manner of Challengers, Chargers, and Camaros, as a poor ZL1 found out the hard way in this video from Drag Racing and Car Stuff.

The crime scene of this particular beatdown was Street Car Takeover in Indianapolis. And we’re guessing the poor Camaro didn’t even know what was coming. The first time these two cars line up, the Mustang rips the front wheels off the ground, launching hard while propelling itself to an impressive 9.63-second pass at 149.75 mph. The ZL1, certainly no slouch, lost in undramatic fashion by recording a 10.27-second pass at 141.52 mph.

Chevy Licking its Wound

Taking that giant “L” didn’t dissuade the Chevy owner from trying again, however. Perhaps thinking that the left lane was a ringer, the two switch it up and try again. But this time, the results are considerably closer. The Mustang hooks and goes like a machine possessed, gapping the Camaro before they even hit the 60-foot mark. But the Chevy manages to make up some ground before letting out a puff of concerning white smoke near the end.

S550 vs ZL1

The Mustang still wins with a 9.58-second pass at 146 mph versus the Camaro’s 9.76 at 151. But at least the Chevy put up a good fight this time. And if he had cut a good light, who knows? But we’re guessing that this second pass was the last one of the day after that little mechanical snafu.

S550 vs ZL1

The only thing missing here is a list of mods for both cars. Regardless, it’s just more proof that if you want to build a 9-second track monster, the 18/19 Mustang GT is hard to beat. Whether you’re talking about the ease or cost of the build, or just facing one at the track!
