Nebraska Family Sculpts Snow into Vintage Mustang

Frosty recreation of a 1960s Mustang GTA notchback brings a whole new meaning to the phrase ‘cool car.’

When it’s snowing outside, some people choose to stay indoors, make hot chocolate, and watch movies on the couch. Jason Blundell, a 43-year-old concrete plant manager who lives in Chadron, Nebraska decided to go outside during a recent snow day and create a one-of-a-kind homage to his vintage Ford Mustang.

To keep his 17-year-old daughter Shelby and 15-year-old son Spencer off of their cellphones, Blundell has often recruited them to help him create giant snow sculptures, such as 7-foot-tall Easter bunnies and a 6-foot-tall jack-o’-lantern complete with an orange coat of paint and a lit candle inside.

Blundell went in a much different direction with his latest project. According to the Omaha World-Herald, Blundell and his children shoveled the snow from neighboring driveways into a giant pile and “spent five hours sculpting a clone of the 1967 Ford Mustang GTA that they store in their garage.” Using a skid loader, concrete wood floats, shovels, ice scrapers, a spray bottle, and measurements from the steel Mustang GTA, they created what is now known in the social media universe as #SnowPony.

At least one person thought they did too good of a job. Blundell said, “We actually had somebody come by while we were building it and they thought we were burying somebody’s car.”

The Snow Pony also caught the eye of Nebraska State Patrol Sgt. Mick Downing, who attends the same church as Blundell. He made sure to give the wintry one-off a fake parking ticket and record his encounter with it, adding, “Some people make snowmen. Not the people in the northwest corner of the panhandle. They make snow cars. Snow Mustangs.”

Snow Pony‘s fame only grew from there. Reuters picked up the story. According to what Downing heard from one of his friends, so did the BBC and an Australian news outlet. Downing said, “Holy cow, this thing blew up.”

Unfortunately, spring is already here, which means no more snow. The good news is that higher temperatures are the perfect excuse to go to the beach. Maybe we’ll see another stunning Mustang sculpture from the Blundells in a couple of months. We can already picture the color: Sand Beige.

He's now a regular at TAWA's two main events: the Texas Auto Roundup in the spring and the Texas Truck Rodeo in the fall.

Over the past several years, Derek has learned how to drive off-road in various four-wheel-drive SUVs (he even camped out for two nights in a Land Rover), and driven around various tracks in hot hatches, muscle cars, and exotics. Several of his pieces, including his article about the 2015 Ford F-150 being crowned TAWA's 2014 "Truck of Texas" and his review of the Alfa Romeo 4C Spider, have won awards in TAWA's annual Excellence in Craft Competition. Last year, his JK Forum profile of Wagonmaster, a business that restores Jeep Wagoneers, won prizes in TAWA’s signature writing contest and its pickup- and SUV-focused Texas Truck Invitational.
