Ford May Make Luxury 4-door Mustang to Compete with Porsche & Audi
Motor1 reports that the new Stang may also come standard with a turbocharged V8 under the hood.
As we already know, Ford is getting out of the car business and is content to build its lineup of crossovers, SUVs, and trucks around its all-star pony car, the Mustang.
More than a month ago, the Blue Oval invited dealers from across the country to see what the company has in mind for future products. Yes, this is the same Ford dealer event that revealed the long-anticipated 2020 Shelby GT500. According to Motor1, one of those plans may be a four-door Mustang coupe, as seen above in a rendered image by X-Tomi Design.
This new Stang would not only have an extra pair of doors for better access to the rear seats, but a turbocharged V8 under the hood. The results would pit the four-door coupe against the Porsche Panamera and Audi A7, bringing Ford’s pony car into the luxury performance market.
And while it looks entirely too long for its own good, we believe there are ways to mitigate the awkwardness of this concept. Take the Dodge Charger, for example. That was once a hi-powered coupe back in the 1960s and 1970s, however its return as a muscle car sedan back in 2004 made everyone scratch their heads. Surprisingly, it has done well ever since, thanks to careful design and planning. So a four-door coupe (sedan) version of a Mustang wouldn’t be all that bizarre idea.
Fans, of course, have a different perspective. Many are confused as to why Ford wants to go in this direction, while others are simply shaking their fists in anger. We understand both sentiments. However, we need to remember that it is going to be one of several options for the car, not a direct replacement.
The four-door coupe would be a separate entity from the Mustang-inspired electric SUV, which was originally going to wear the Mach 1 name. Speaking of inspiration, Motor1 says the turbocharging system would come from tech used in the current lineup of EcoBoost V6s, and could be a twin-turbo system, at that.
We’ll believe it when we see it, of course, but it would be pretty cool to take on the Germans with a sedan version of the all-American Mustang.
