New six-banger Mustangs may be gone forever, but this Ford-powered, carbon fiber monster will blaze the track with 350 horsepower.

The days of having the option to buy a V6-powered Mustang are over. Well, at least for now. Perhaps the day will come when we can once again opt for one, maybe even the mighty 3.5-liter Ecoboost. But for now, rental car companies and young folks who can’t afford sky-high insurance rates will have to settle for a four-banger base car. So what will become of the Mustang’s old 3.7-liter V6? Well, apparently, it won’t exactly head to the great engine graveyard in the sky just yet.

Credit a company by the name of Revolution Race Cars for that. The brainchild of Radical Sportscars co-founder Phil Abbott, Revolution’s singular goal is to create what Abbott sees as the perfect race car. One that can offer Le Mans-type technology at a price your average aspiring racer can afford. And the result of their efforts is this – the Revolution track car.

Making extensive use of carbon fiber, the Revolution weighs in at a featherweight 1,653 pounds. But the most interesting aspect of the build is the powerplant they chose to go with. Ford’s 3.7-liter Duratech V6 wouldn’t be most folks’ first choice. But with a naturally-aspirated output of 350 horsepower, it makes a lot of sense as a durable and reliable powerplant. According to Revolution, the motor is good for 100 hours (or 6,314 miles) before it requires a rebuild.

And given the commonality of the former Mustang powerplant, that should be a cheap rebuild, too. Even better, the price of entry for the Revolution will reportedly be less than $131,000. Which is pretty darn cheap for a racer of this pedigree.

Owners will be able to compete in a one-make series called the BARC Sports Prototype Cup. So if you’re itching to dip your toe into the world of professional motorsports but don’t have sponsors or millions of dollars, the new Revolution might just be your ticket to the dance.
