2021 Shelby Super Snake Roadster Infuses Serious Style With Performance
Limited to just 25 units for 2021, the new Shelby Super Snake Roadster might just be the cream of Shelby’s crop.
Shelby American recently pulled the covers off its 2021 lineup, which is, as always, quite impressive. But perhaps the most interesting vehicle in the tuner’s stable is the new Shelby Super Snake Roadster, a drop-top version of the existing Super Snake. As is the case with all other 2021 Shelby American Mustangs, only 98 units of this stunning Super Snake will be built to mark what would have been the late Carroll Shelby‘s 98th birthday – but just 25 of those will be roadsters bound for the U.S.
The two-seater convertible Shelby Super Snake Roadster is inspired by the speedster racers of the 1950s but features thoroughly modern styling and mechanicals. That starts on the outside with some serious bodywork including aluminum widebody front fenders, a functional ram-air hood, a new front fascia stuffed with canards, ducts, and a splitter, side rockers with rocker wings, a rear spoiler, tail panel, and diffuser, a hard tonneau cover, and of course, lots of stripes and badges.
As is the case with the regular Super Snake, the Speedster has plenty of power on tap, too. The 5.0-liter Coyote V8 has been treated to a polished Whipple supercharger, which helps it make 825 horsepower and do 0-60 in 3.5 seconds. Shelby also adds their “extreme” cooling system to the mix, along with a Borla exhaust, stronger half shafts, and a short-throw shifter and one-piece driveshaft for manuals or transmission cooling for automatics.
The suspension has been treated to a few upgrades to handle this extra power and keep the Shelby Super Snake Roadster planted firmly around corners. That includes a Ford Performance track handling pack, 20-inch forged one-piece aluminum wheels with Shelby performance-spec tires, a Shelby/Brembo braking system with 6-piston front and 4-piston rear calipers, and a Shelby brake and bearing duct cooling system.
Inside the cabin, the Super Snake Roadster reminds occupants of how special it is with a full Shelby-spec upgrade and the iconic tuner’s name on the door sills, floor mats, gauge cluster, dash badge, and light bar. And for those that want more, options include painted stripes, a complete widebody package, Penske track suspension, and rear seat delete with a harness bar added.
Truthfully, while we love the entire Shelby American Mustang lineup, the Super Snake Roadster might just be the cream of the crop. With stunning styling and non-stop open-air thrill rides, it perfectly embodies the spirit of the original Shelby Cobra – and that makes it a truly special tribute to its namesake.
