2020 Shelby GT500 Actually Weighs Less Than We Thought
YouTuber puts his 2020 GT500 on the scale to find it weighs nearly 200 pounds less than we previously thought.
As the monstrous 2020 GT500 begins its rollout, we continue to find out some incredible things about the car. While we are already well aware that this car is capable of some incredible feats, including a zero to sixty sprint in 3.3 seconds and a blisteringly fast quarter-mile time, there are certain figures we weren’t getting out of Ford. Real-world situations often differ from paper plans. In this case, the real world outdid the “on paper” figure.
Young YouTuber Speed Phenom seems to be the first to get his hands on his own GT500, and he is already doing insane things with it. For example, he already holds the world record drag time for a stock Mustang (which was faster than Ford advertised). However, one of the most interesting things so far is taking it to the scale.
“I’m going to be weighing the new 2020 Shelby GT500. We’ve been hearing confusing facts. Does it weigh over 4,200 pounds or maybe 4,100 pounds?” says Speed Phenom, who’s real name is quite well hidden, by the way.
Fairly recently, we reported on a rumored curb weight for the GT500, which was said to be 4,225 pounds. That would put it in Dodge Demon territory in terms of weight. So, what did the scale say?
“Well, it weighs 4,080 pounds. Pretty good actually, considering how much cooling it has for the horsepower. Also, the size of those rotors, those are sixteen and a half-inch rotors. I think someone weighed them online and they weigh 45 pounds each,” he says
It’s also worth noting that this is a based GT500 with the handling package. Otherwise, it is completely unmodified. That is a pretty substantial difference from what we initially thought.
“That makes wonder: How much is a track pack going to weigh with the carbon fiber wheels? Also, with the rear seat delete, we could be looking sub 4,000 pound GT500,” he says
Lucky for us, we are likely to get a definitive answer, as he also has a GT500 Track Pack on order. There is a good chance he’ll put that one on the scale too!
The Speed Phenom youtube channel is growing rapidly as he continues to post videos of the GT500. We aren’t quite sure how he managed to get the first one, but it may have something to do with the fact that he also has a GT350R and a GT500 Super Snake. Ford has repeatedly proven that it treats it’s repeat customers with priority, so it makes decent sense.
Overall, if you want to see some excellent Mustang content, we’d highly recommend subscribing to his channel. After all, he has been posting some great GT500 videos, and we know there will be more to come! Perhaps he’ll reveal some more slightly vague things about the GT500 that we don’t know as of yet.
