2012 BOSS 302 “Tooling Tryout” Car Is an Interesting Rarity

Back in 2012, Ford made a handful of pre-production BOSS 302s that they called “Tooling Tryout” cars. On this week’s “Muscle Car of the Week,” they’re giving you a walk around of the very first of those Tooling Tryout cars. The real crux of the video below is an explanation of everything that makes the BOSS a boss. But is it as good as the original Boss 302 from 1969 and 1970?

Being that the Tooling Tryout car is a rare pre-production model, it is truly valuable and worthy of any collection. This collection, however, has no trouble with exercising the car the way it was intended. In the video, the host is clearly driving with some verve, and he’s not afraid to do a burnout or two. This adds an extra level of cool to the car’s pre-production status. There’s nothing that irks me quite as much as someone who keeps their unobtanium cars in glass cases and climate-controlled display rooms.

So, you’ve got 440 horsepower, a 6-speed gearbox, 3.73 gears, lightweight wheels, a downforce-generating aero package, and some sticky rubber — what are you going to do with it? Personally I’d be at a track day until that rubber’s worn to the cords, but if you want to do a burnout, more (Coyote) power to you!
