Did Ford Give Us a Boss 302 Easter Egg?

Is Ford Trying to Tell Us Something About a New Boss 302?

The official announcement of the 2018 Ford Mustang was not without drama. Between leaked photos and Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson presenting a veteran with a new Mustang, it was easy enough to miss what very well may have been a subtle hint from Ford.

Check out the background of this official image of the face-lifted Mustang’s interior. Is a 2012-2013 Boss 302 visible, albeit partially obscured by the A-pillar and some plant growth? Why did Ford put it there? And what does it mean? We have a few ideas.

Did Ford Give Us a Boss 302 Easter Egg?

Is this is an Easter Egg designed to tip-off eagle-eyed viewers about a future model, or a red herring designed to throw us off the trail? Well, one possibility is that someone at Ford just figured that it might be fun to put another Mustang in the background. But if that’s the case, why didn’t they just use another pre-production mule in that space?

As CJ Pony Parts notes, what if Ford is planning on a Boss 302 re-reboot for the 2018 Mustang? It would be kind of unusual, for a few reasons. For one, special models like the Boss are usually rolled out to spruce up an aging model between refreshes. Or before the introduction of an all-new car.

A Boss 302 really wouldn’t make sense, anyway. It would have to slot between the GT and the GT350 in terms of performance and price point. With rumors of a new GT500 on the horizon, it seems unnecessary. The GT350 would become the intermediate model.

Maybe it’s a more subtle hint than that. Maybe, Ford intends for the new Mustang GT to offer performance on par with the 2012-2013 Boss 302. Now that would certainly be impressive.

Then again, maybe it’s nothing. Maybe someone at Ford is laughing at all of us right now, for connecting pieces of a puzzle that simply doesn’t exist. Any way you look at it, though, the 2018 Mustang is definitely worth getting excited about.

In other conspiracy theory news, could the 2018 Ford Mustang be packing 455 horsepower from its updated 5.0-liter V8? Our pals at Road & Track believe it could. Horsepower figures for the updated car have yet to be announced, unless you treat the photo above as an Easter egg.

The odometer reading above pays tribute to the Mustang’s debut model year. And the amount of miles to empty is 289, which harks back to the 289-cid V8 in the first Mustang. Could the “4” on the gear display and the “55” in the speedometer combine to reveal the 2018 Ford Mustang GT’s official horsepower figure? Only time will tell.
