Whipple-charged 2014 Mustang GT Runs Savage 8s on the Strip

Who says you can’t teach an old horse new tricks?

Time really does fly: The S550 has been around for over five years now. And while that car has proven it can do everything from handle like a true track car to roast Lamborghinis in a drag race, it’s cast a big shadow. So big, in fact, that it usually eclipses its predecessor, the S197. And while the S550 makes it seem ancient, that car was a revelation in its day too. A retro-looking throwback to the Mustang’s ’60s heyday, the S197 was hailed as a return to form. Today, it may be starting to hit the bottom of the depreciation curve, but it’s by no means yesterday’s news.

For proof, check out Andrew Lambert’s 2014 Mustang GT. In a video posted by Palm Beach Dyno, this late-model Whipple ‘Stang is one of the most formidable cars hitting the strip. While it looks relatively stock from the outside, its big V8 is topped by a Whipple 2.9-liter Gen III supercharger and runs on E85. Power goes to the rear wheels via a built 6R80 automatic transmission. Throw some slicks on it, and this GT will run 8.85-second quarter-miles at 158 miles per hour.

Madness on the quarter-mile

In short, that’s insane. In the brief video, we watch Andrew’s GT line up at the 2018 Mod Nationals at South Georgia Motorsports Park. While he’s pitted against another car (which is mostly out of frame), it’s clear within the first few seconds that it’s no match for the Mustang. His jump off the line is damn near perfect, and in no time at all  – well, 8.85 seconds, he’s a quarter-mile away.

With the mighty S550 dominating the Mustang world, it’s easy to forget about the last-generation car. But with just a few mods, the S197 still a world-beater. They aren’t getting any younger, and in a few years, they’ll be available for next to nothing. As you can see in this video, they can be made to go very, very fast. Of course, we think the idea of a world full of cheap, brutally fast S197s is one we want to live in. And as Andrew’s car proves, you can absolutely teach an old horse new tricks.
