Group of Wicked First-Gen Mustangs Bring the Thunder Down PCH
Sights and sounds of this group of eight first-gen Mustangs cruising down the famous California highway is truly second to none.
While much in the California automotive scene has changed over the years – look no further than the prevalence of EVs and charging stations populating traffic-laden freeways, for example – some things remain the same. That includes the Golden State’s love for classic cars, which is no surprise given the fact that the hot rodding movement was essentially born in SoCal, of course. We get a nice reminder of this frequently from the YouTube channel AutotopiaLA, which recently caught up with a group of first-gen Mustangs as they made their way down Pacific Coast Highway as part of the 2023 Quarantine/Thanksgiving Cruise.
For this annual event – which, as one might imagine, began during the height of the pandemic – a grand total of eight first-gen Mustangs gathered to take a nice trip to celebrate the holidays, and it’s an eclectic mix, to be sure. First up in this group, we have a familiar sight – an old Shelby pony car called “White Horse,” which is fresh off some engine work that has it running great and sounding even better.
The owner of White Horse, Dave, is joined by his brother Tom in a black fastback with a 347 stroker, along with a blue Mustang that looks equally great. For diversity’s sake, there’s even an old, beat up machine that looks like it could be headed to the scrap yard or parted out, and yet, it’s admittedly one of the fastest cars in this group.
Then we have a shiny black coupe with a 427 small block cranking out nearly 600 horsepower, which sounds just as good as anything in this pack. It’s quite the sensory delight overall, but unfortunately, Dave’s new engine only has around 120 miles on it, meaning that he can’t quite bang it off the rev limiter just yet.
Other than a small scare when the group passes a California Highway Patrol officer – thankfully after slowing down following a bit of a romp – the cruise goes off without a hitch, and the crew arrives at their meet with no problem. Even though we weren’t there to experience this amazing drive in person, watching it unfold in this video is the next best thing – and you can bet we’ll be keeping our eyes peeled for future cruises of this kind, too.
