Ford Mustang GTD 2020 Ford GT and 2005 Ford GT Drag Race on Hagerty

Sure, the Mustang GTD is the most powerful Ford ever built. Can it hold a candle to Ford’s legendary 21st-century supercars in a drag race?

The Mustang GTD has a funny way of drawing opinions out of everyone who looks at it. Sure, you can argue that it’s way too expensive, way too heavy, and a number of other tropes that people who will never own one like to throw around. What you can’t argue, though, is that it’s the most powerful production Ford in history, with 815 horsepower. In addition, it’s largely built by the Canadian company Multimatic, which you may or may not know also built the 2020 Ford GT. That might just lead you to wonder how they stack up against each other.

Fortunately, Hagerty and Jason Cammisa had the same thought. For funsies, they threw in the 2005 Ford GT, too. They brought all three of these legends out for a heads-up drag race. While we must admit that taking these three iconic Le Mans-destined cars to a drag race is a bit like hiring Magnus Carlsen to play Tic-Tac-Toe against your toddler, it still caught our eye and dragged us in for a curious look. No pun intended. So, which of these Ford performance icons takes the cake?

Brute Force and Horsepower, or Mid-Engine Engineering?

Before the race, Cammisa outlines the specs of each car. He notes that, while the GTD has the most power, it also weighs the most by a decent amount.

“The GTD’s supercharged 5.2-liter V8 makes an idiotic 815 horsepower and 664 pound-feet of torque. So it is the most powerful Ford ever, but it doesn’t have the best power-to-weight ratio, because that GTD weighs 4,365 pounds. The 2020 Ford GT, on the other hand, makes ‘only’ 660 horsepower from its twin-turbocharged three-and-a-half-liter V6, but it weighs 1,000 pounds less than the Mustang,” said Cammisa.

He goes on to outline that the 2005 Ford GT featured in the video has Ford Performance upgrades, including an ECU tune, injectors, and a smaller supercharger pulley that bumps power to 650 horsepower. That said, and as you’d expect, the manual-transmission Ford GT can’t compete with the dual-clutch duo. In the drag race, it immediately gets left in the dust. The real race was the GTD vs the 2020 Ford GT, and spoiler alert, the GTD wins by the tiniest fraction. Still, this video is worth a watch if nothing else for the engine noises. Furthermore, if you’re into video production, the editing is absolutely stunning. Check it out below.
