Mitsubishi Evo Takes on Twin-turbo Mustang Races For Big Cash
Poor Mitsubishi. You can’t sleep at the light in a head’s up street race.
Six thousand dollars is on the line for this street race between a twin turbo Mustang GT and a built Mitsubishi Evo. With a street practically closed down for the action, these two line up for an epic race but immediately, there’s some confusion as to how the race is going to be held.
Both drivers had agreed that the start of the race would be marked by the light coming on from a flashlight. But the mustang jumped that and launched when the starter simply moved his arm up in the air. However, the Mitsubishi did exactly the same thing. Normally that would have been an automatic loss for the Mustang, leaving before the light. Some may also say that you can salvage that run by making a chase race when someone jumps the start, but instead, the two agree to re-run.
In the second race, it was all down to the driver. The Mustang timed the light perfectly, and got a great launch, while the Mitsubishi had an awful launch and was caught sleeping. This was a race that was over before it started.
We often talk about the advantages of all-wheel-drive compared to just rear drive in drag racing and how it relates to surface prep, but one thing to consider is driver skill. Although a car like the Evo should have the best launch in theory, it is also very easy to bog it down off the line. Especially if you bog down enough to get out of boost. That’s exactly the case that happened here. Even though the Evo was slightly reeling in the Mustang by the end of the race, it was already too late, and the twin turbo GT driver got a big fat stack of cash.
