On Track in a 15-Year-Old Mustang Cobra Vintage Race Car

Given the choice, why wouldn’t you go vintage racing in a championship-winning Mustang?

First we are forced to talk about the elephant in the room. It is our personal desire to see racing, especially vintage racing, carried out in as safe a manner as possible. In what was supposed to be a single car running a few laps around an empty race track, the track officials allowed The Smoking Tire‘s Matt Farah out on the course without giving him a clear track. With two track safety trucks on the course, Matt should never have been allowed out of the pit lane. But clearly, in the video above you can see he was given the go-ahead by the track officials. On the very first lap, with Matt likely traveling at near triple digit speeds, he is surprised by a truck sitting at the bottom of the banking of the track. Thank goodness nothing bad happened, but a cut tire at speed could have really screwed up the day.

Aside from the bonkers lack of safety discipline displayed by the track workers and SVRA in general, this video is actually quite enjoyable. The owner of this car was able to pick up this championship-winning New Edge Mustang Cobra for just 15-thousand dollars. And you can tell from the parts under the hood that the team spent far more than 15-grand developing the car into a winner. With around 450 horsepower, it’s sure to be a whole heck of a lot faster around the track than your average Spec Miata, for about the same cash outlay. Which would you rather race, a mid-pack SM or a big V8 bruiser like this ‘Stang?

Despite the twice-per-lap safety truck scares, Matt manages to get a decent feel for the car and its abilities. Perhaps a true pro with more seat time and more experience at that track could have run a faster time. But Matt puts in an excellent short stint with the car, properly warming the tires and brakes before really giving it the full throttle. And if you aren’t already subscribed to The Smoking Tire YouTube channel, you should, as they have great new videos like this one every day.
