Mustang Boss 302
This can't be the 302 SE we've been talking about. I'm hoping the "R" reference is to differenciate itself from a lower cost Boss 302 verison, or maybe the poor mans 302R ends up a Mach1?
Ford Racing did not release any photos with the announcement (My guess is, no Boss 302Rs have been completed yet, although doubtless there will be one or more by the SEMA show in November.).
Worse than no pics, there is no clarification if that 4-valve 5.0L is the current 5.0L used in the FR500C (a modular Mustang Cobra 4.6L with larger barrels, GT500 heads, and the world's coolest intake manifold) or if it is the new "Road Runner/Coyote/Boss/EcoBoost/Hurricane/Whatever 5.0L" that's been speculated about since the Taft Administration. Is this the drizzlin' schlitz or what? Come ON, Ford!
Oh, if it is the new "RR/C/B/E/H/W 5.0L V8", that could also explain the lack of photos. Be aware that if this is the new "RR/C/B/E/H/W 5.0L V8", the horsepower may not be stated more specifically than "about 400 HP" so as not to be penalized for too much power by the Grand American Road Racing Association. Competitors in other makes/models in the GS Class of the Grand-Am are gonna howl, anyway, because they don't want the vehicle that has won three of the last five manufacturer's championships getting an even more powerful engine. The FR500C single-handedly drove the CTS-Vs, G8s, and GTOs out of the GS Class.
If, OTOH, the Boss 302R is powered by the same modular 5.0 that has powered the FR500C since 2005, that has potential ramifications, too. The most vexing of which would be that the new "RR/C/B/E/H/W 5.0L V8" may be further off into the future than we hoped.
But to wax optimistic, I believe the Boss 302R DOES have the "RR/C/B/E/H/W 5.0L V8", and that it will be shown with the hood up/removed at SEMA in November! How's that for a sunshine attitude, huh?

My guess would be that it is the old Cammer 5.0 though that raises the question, "Why bother?" Old motor that's news to nobody and just the usual off-road racer package (haven't they done this before) but with Boss 302 stickers and yellow paint.
Perhaps there is a reason to bother though, and that would be the new 5.0 and a lead in to a production street Boss model....hmmmmmm.....

Whenever the Cammer 5.0 is mentioned it is always called as such by Ford. I am thinking it is the coyote. Why else would there be no pics for this kind of announcement?
What better way to get people even more wound up about a production Boss than to hint at the race version first.
Why would they want to "make sure their dealers hear about it first" when there are only 50? Like any dealers are going to see any. It's an intentional "leak".

And, yes, there'd be no better way to introduce a new 'Cammer than to put it in a racecar right away! Kicking *** is an art form, and a sophisticated, high-powered 5.0L V8 makes a fine paintbrush! November is Sunday, and SEMA is next week!

Notice that EVERY time the engine is mentioned it is called the "Cammer" or the "Cammer R50". NOT ONCE do they simply refer to it as the "5.0".
I think it is very likely that it is the new version of the Grand Am car with the Coyote rather than the Cammer, hence the drop of the "Cammer R50" name in the specs...and not to mention no pics!
If this was just a "limited edition" of the FR500C, it would basically be a paint and decal package, which would mean it would be all about the looks...so why are "details limited at this time" and why not at least have a teaser pic????
Also, why would they keep the cammer around, when the coyote will be a more modern 5.0 4V V8???

Sorry, I am convinced it is an ad for the new racing version of the coyote 5.0, and a way to get racers excited about switching over to the new motor.
Clino: I do so hope that you are right!
Sadly, there was no BOSS 302R at the SEMA show and no
"Road Runner/Coyote/Boss/EcoBoost/Hurricane/Whatever" 5.0L quadcam V8, either...
Somebody somewhere needs to leak some pics and legitimate details of this engine and when it will hit the dealerships in F-150s and/or Mustangs.

Based on the link above the Boss 302R uses the new production 5.0 as the basis for its powertrain.
Great news. After finally getting the specifications for the new engine (which exceeded my expectations,) I am saving and preparing for Ford to release a road going Boss 302 in 2012, which will be the perfect upgrade from my Bullitt!
Here's what I'm hoping the package will feature:
- 302 4 cam engine upgraded to 425-450 hp and 400-420 tq. Open element filter w/ducted cold air - possible elimination of sound tube and hardware to save weight.
- Available 3.55 or 3.73 axle ratio, if it is found to be a benefit.
- Unique paint scheme including constrasting hood and rear spoiler, rear louvers and 1/4 glass treatment, and Boss 302 stripe package similar to what is seen in the 302R. Make mine orange.
- Specialized 19x9 wheels (lightweight) with the summer only Pirelli's.
- Brembo brakes with aggressive pads - similar to my Bullitt's spec.
- Suspension tuned and refined to further stretch the car's capabilities; 1G+ on the skidpad with the original sticky rubber
- Optional onboard chrono package, similar to what you see on today's Porsche road cars
- Hurst/Ford racing white ball shifter with chrome handle.
- Lightening features such as a trunk mounted battery, further use of composites and aluminum parts, ???
