Mustang Lithium - SEMA 2019

A collaboration with Webasto, electrified Mustang shocks the highway with 900 cyber horses, 1,000 lb-ft of tire-smokin’ torque!

Once upon a time (last week), we were all whisked away to Las Vegas, gazing upon all of the wonderful Mustangs gathered in and around the grounds of the Las Vegas Convention Center for SEMA 2019. All we had to do was check them out, find our favorites, and bring them all back to share with all of you.

While much of the focus as of late has been on the upcoming, Mustang-inspired electric SUV Ford will introduce, Nov. 17, the Blue Oval brought to SEMA a different kind of electric pony: the Mustang Lithium.

“Ford has made no secret of the fact that we are electrifying our most popular nameplates,” said Ford’s product development chief Hau Thai-Tang. “This one-off Mustang prototype is a great opportunity for us, together with Webasto, to showcase to our customers what a new electrified powertrains can do for performance in a car they already know and love.”

Mustang Lithium Makes Huge Power

Built in a collaboration with California’s Webasto Charging Systems, the Mustang Lithium swaps out the big V8s and turbo-fours for a dual-core electric motor with dual power inverters, fueled by an 800-volt battery system putting out double the power of systems found in other EVs already on the showroom floor right now.

The resulting output is 900 cyber horses and 1,000 lb-ft of electrifying, neck-snapping torque, all of it sent through a drag-racing ready six-speed manual transmission to the 8.8-inch rear, guaranteeing a ton of white smoke from the Michelin Pilot Sport 4S tires. Handling is handled by a Ford Performance handling package, as well as suspension bits from the Shelby GT350R, and there are four drive modes at the ready: Valet, Sport, Track, and Beast.

“Very similar to Ford’s push for vehicle electrification, this is an innovative way to further the technologies we’re developing to enable vehicle electrification while creating a vision of how cool the future of electric performance will be,” said Webasto Customized Solutions president and CEO, Mark Denny.

While this Mustang is a one-off to wow the SEMA crowd, we do wish for something like this to enter production in the near future, as this is one electric pony we’d love to ride.
