S550 Mustang Gets 2K Horsepower Dragster Engine for Fun & Science
This S550 Ford Mustang has loads of power thanks to its blown, alcohol-fed monster motor, but it’s not a straight-line performer.
By now, most everyone that knows anything about cars is well aware that the S550 Ford Mustang is a truly capable machine, one that can churn out incredible amounts of power with the right mods, thanks to its versatile Coyote heart. However, that hasn’t stopped a handful of folks from stuffing massive engines into this particular platform, with generally excellent results. Now, we can add YouTuber Western Champlin to that list – the same guy that previously stuffed a Cummins diesel into an S550 Ford Mustang, and has also churned out similarly crazy builds like a Ranger monster truck.
Recently, Champlin became a bit enamored with the Australian Burnout Comps, which are precisely what one might imagine – shows put on specifically for folks to destroy as much rubber as possible for an adoring crowd. These machines typically utilize dragster-style powerplants to overwhelm their rear tires, transforming them into pure smoke. Thus, he decided he was going to stuff a 1,500 horsepower big block in his S550 and join the fun.
Unfortunately, after spending four months on that particular build, the Mustang’s engine blew up after just 10 minutes of burnout action. Thus, Champlin did what any good enthusiast would do – he stuffed something even more powerful in his pony car. In this case, that’s a wildly supercharged, alcohol-fueled big block similar to the ones used in monster trucks, dragsters, and of course, Aussie burnout competition cars.
Luckily, the massive mill fits perfectly in the Mustang thanks to the fact that it’s similar to the previous blown powerplant, so much of the work required for the swap is already done. Before you know it, Champlin is already ripping off burnouts in his wildly overpowered pony car, which is still riding on its stock suspension, amazingly enough. In fact, aside from the massive mill, it’s otherwise mostly as it came from the factory, which is a testament to the S550’s robust platform.
While it may seem a bit crazy to stuff an engine in a car with the sole intent of making it a burnout king rather than incredibly quick in a straight line, Champlin clearly caught the burnout bug and went to extremes to join in on the fun. Personally, we just enjoy watching it light up the tires with a mere light press of the throttle, and we can imagine that such a thing is rather addictive – and incredibly fun, to boot.
