Barn find ‘Playmate Pink,’ (formally known as ‘Dusk Rose’) Mustang is one of very few to come from Ford in this color.

Finding an all-original Mustang worthy of restoration is an event worth celebrating in its own right. However, every once in a while, an exceptionally stunning barn find comes up. Whether it be a one-of-one custom order car or a numbers matching Shelby, there seems to be an endless supply of old cars that owners have tucked away for decades. However, this “Playmate Pink” Mustang is quite the spectacle and has an equally interesting story to go with it.

According to Autoevolution, the outstanding pink finish gained the name “Playmate Pink” because the winner of Playboy’s Playmate of the Year received a Mustang in this color in 1964 and 1969. Also known as  “Playboy Pink,” the official Ford name for the finish is Dusk Rose.

Allegedly, of the over 600,000 Mustangs sold in 1966, only around 12 of them came in this color. Currently, this particular example is for sale on eBay with a starting bid of $15,000 and a buy-it-now price of $60,000.

Original Owner Claims It’s All Original

According to the eBay listing, the vehicle ran and drove great up until the seller parked it in this garage 35 years ago. There isn’t any specific reason as to why, but the listing states that it was “rescued” from the seller’s godfather’s garage.

Though, the term “rescued” may be a bit of a stretch since it seems the seller put it there. Ultimately, though, it appears that under its dusty and spider web coated exterior, the car is overall in pretty good shape. Best of all, the seller states that the clean title is in hand and ready to transfer.

Though it isn’t entirely verifiable, the seller also states that this may be the only Dusk Rose 1966 Mustang to retain its “Playmate Pink” paint job. Considering the minimal amount of these cars produced, it doesn’t seem too unlikely.

Especially when you consider the fact that, over the years, folks could have purchased these pink cars and repainted them to suit their desires. While we can appreciate that its a rare color, we can certainly see why some folks might not opt to keep it that way.

Rarity Worth the Price Increase?

All things considered, this price might be a tad optimistic. After all, Hagerty currently lists a “good condition” 1966 Mustang GT price at $41,400. Though the rare paint color is fairly well preserved, it’s far from being in good condition. The seller claims that the interior has no tears or rips. So, if that truly is the case, there’s a good chance this old diamond could shine once again. However, based on the seemingly rusty panel edges and cracking paint, this car is a long way from being what it once was.

Overall, this car is extremely cool, and the rarity is exceptional. However, only time will tell if this price is reasonable. Tell us what you think on The Mustang Source forums!
