A supercharged 5.0-liter V8 engine will reside under the hood of the upcoming GT500, putting loyalists at ease amidst EcoBoost rumors.

The rumor mill has been working overtime when it comes to the upcoming pony car, which has managed to maintain a level of secrecy similar to that of the Ford GT supercar. We’re talking about the Ford Mustang Shelby GT500, of course. Until now, speculation regarding its powerplant, and most importantly its induction type, have been a hot topic for fans throughout the land. Thankfully, a short blurb found on Motor Trend’s latest issue may have revealed a little something.

The image you see to the side was originally shared by Redditor willy_p3te, who pointed out the specs to what could be the pinnacle of the Mustang lineup hiding in a sea of performance figures.

As you can see, it lists a “5.0-liter, 680-horsepower and 630-lb-ft of torque, supercharged V8” engine on the specs column. Meanwhile, the short blurb on the left mentions that “A new GT500 with a supercharged 5.0-liter and the new injection setup could debut in 2018.”

Does Motor Trend know something we don’t? Probably so. Are they speculating to build up even more hype surrounding the powerful beast? Probably so. Regardless, we must digest the gargantuan 680 horsepower the upcoming GT500 could possibly pump out. Will the new Shelby aim to be an even more capable track star than the GT350R, or will it settle for being the huskier but more powerful brother?

Based on the publication’s asterisk next to its claims, and the fact that no official announcements have been made by the Blue Oval, the only answer is: we don’t know.
