The Retro-tastic 2018 Mustang Pony Package Turns Up the Nostalgia

1. Changes for 2018

Ford takes the Mustang a step further for 2018, and if you liked it last year, you will probably love the new version. The original American pony car is receiving quite a few updates that will allow it to perform better than ever. You've probably already heard about the elimination of the six-cylinder engine, which leaves the excellent EcoBoost 2.3-liter turbo four cylinder as the base motor, which is lighter and more powerful anyway. To improve the handling performance of the Mustang, Ford made Magnetorheological shocks (with damping that can adapt to driving conditions) an option for any trim level. Automatic transmission customers can now choose the new 10-speed automatic transmission as an upgrade over the six-speed, while those who prefer a manual get an improved transmission as well, but still just six-speeds. The Mustang is becoming more versatile, on the track and on the road.

2. Forward to the Past

Even without the much-anticipated Pony package, the 2018 Mustang has some added retro-touches in its shape. The hood is now lower, which gives the entire car a more-aggressive look, as well as visual connection to the early 1970s cars that many people love. Finally, the new Mustang comes with more color options, like Orange Fury and Kona Blue, just like how they used to make them.

3. Pony Package Grille

Things get retro in a hurry when you choose the retro pony package. The first thing that changes is the emblem on the grill, and as per the Mustang's heritage, it is not just the pony; with this package, the pony will go back into its corral. The pony gets a chrome surround that will change the entire look of the Mustang's grille, plus a chrome band that goes across the grille opening. This small change gives the front of the Mustang a visual connection that all the 1960s cars had, and we've only seen it on a modern Mustang once on the 2015 Anniversary Package.

4. Pony Package Exterior

The Pony Package includes more exclusive retro-touches on the exterior of your Mustang. Polished aluminum 19" wheels have a design that is a cross between a vintage 5 spoke Magnum 500 and a modern alloy wheel. On both sides of the car near the rocker panels you will notice stripes like those traditionally on Shelby cars, giving a subtle retro feel, only reading "Mustang" instead of "GT350". Finally, the side windows get added chrome trim, complementing the wheels and the grille, and serving as a reminder of simpler times.

5. Final Touches

Getting into your 2018 Pony-packaged Mustang, you will notice the interior has a few upgrades that apply to all of the 2018 models as well. Exclusive to the Pony are carpeted floor mats featuring an ebony embroidered pony logo, designed specifically for this package. Finishing it off, the Mustang's logo on the rear decklid has gone back to the Tri-bar red/white/blue badge that was used on older Mustangs, and every time you lay eyes on it, you will remember your old '60s Mustang.
