Mustang Ranked Best-Selling Sports Car in the World

Storied American nameplate will be sold in 147 world markets by end of 2017.

Top of the world.

Yep, that just about sums up the Ford Mustang and the car’s allegiance of fans.

Sure, for most here at The Mustang Source, that really isn’t big news. In fact, it’s pretty common knowledge that the Mustang is “THE” car. Which is why it’s garnered such a huge fan-base. But when that idea is solidified with indisputable statistical data, it takes on an entirely different meaning.

We can thank IHS Markit for this most recent validation, as highlighted in a report by Business Insider. And despite having more than 50 years under its belt to reach the pinnacle of sports car appeal, the Mustang’s final thrust to the top is due in large part to Ford’s decision to expand sales of the Mustang to other countries. Particularly areas that the car hasn’t been offered in year’s past.

“Mustang’s ascension to best-selling sports car in the world in 2016 was driven largely by continued global rollout that saw big sales gains in Germany and China, as well as the car’s introduction to smaller nations such as New Caledonia, Gibraltar and Bonaire,” said Ford.

Even more notable, since the Mustang launched in China — the world’s biggest auto market — it has become the best-selling sports car in that country.

By the end of 2017, the Ford Mustang will be sold in a total of 147 markets worldwide.

That’s quite a climb for a car that started some 50 years ago as a fairly simple American idea. And yet it has still managed to stay true to its roots.
