Mustang Rally Cheers up War Veterans

Mustang Rally
We guess it is true – there is something soothing to the soul about being around Mustangs.

From what we hear, that was pretty evident during a recent Mustang rally in Sturgis, South Dakota at the Fort Meade VA Center where a few vintage models of the pony car as well as new ones were on display.

The Mustangs roll into town as part of the High Five Tour to help raise money for wounded veterans, reports the Rapid City Journal news site.

Ken Foley, an event volunteer, told the news source that those who come to see the car span the generations from World War II veterans to the most recent Iraq and Afghanistan veterans.

Ralph Thayer, a 90-year-old veteran, bought his 1965 light jade Mustang on the tour at the urging of Russ Young, a veteran who served in the Army from 1990 to 1993.

“I’ve always liked Mustangs,” Young is reported as saying. “I actually like the older ones better.”

Thayer, a World War II veteran who served in England for three years said, bought his Mustang about 15 years ago after always wanting one.

“I love the three-speed. It makes me feel like a kid again,” said Thayer, as reported by the Meade County Times-Tribune news source.
