Mustang Gets Full GT4 Racing Approval

Official homologation status is expected to drive the development of more Mustang GT-racing teams.

The Ford Mustang has landed a big win in the world of racing. The Stephane Ratel Organization (SRO) recently granted Ford homologation for the GT4 race car.

In short, that means the pony car is now officially certified to compete in all GT4 championship races. That includes the GT4 European Series, British GT Championship, and Blancpain GT Series Asia, according to Sportscar365.com.

SRO issued their official stamp of approval July 31. That also gives the Mustang the go-ahead to compete in endurance races such as the Liqui-Moly Bathurst 12 Hour and Motul Sepang 12 Hours.

Prior to the July 31 approval, the Mustang’s competition at GT4 specification had been limited to North America. Both the IMSA Continental Tire SportsCar Challenge and Pirelli World Challenge issued specific homologations for the Mustang GT4.

Apparently, Ford expected the Mustang to be granted full worldwide approval for the GT4 at the beginning of 2017. However, the process was delayed in part  dueto the relocation of the car’s oil tank.

The recent homologation approval may jump-start a number of Mustang entries in North America and Europe. They would join teams like KohR Motorsports, VOLT Racing, and PF Racing who already have been gearing up for the approval.

Maybe you are wondering why any of this GT4 racing stuff should interest the average Mustang fan. Remember this: Some of car manufacturers’ best performance enhancements are often sparked by the feedback they get from club racing teams like these.
