Mustang EcoBoost Roars with Borla Sport Cat-Back Exhaust

By -

The Ford Performance by Borla exhaust system adds lots of attitude to the four-cylinder 2018 Mustang.

The Ford Performance by Borla Sport Cat-Back exhaust system for the 2018 Mustang EcoBoost adds the proper grumble of a muscle car and it is remarkably easy to install yourself. The crew at CJ Pony Parts put together this short video showing how easily the Borla system can be added to the turbocharged, four-cylinder pony car to extract the kind of sound that you want from your new Mustang.

Exhaust System

Before getting in to the installation of the Ford Performance by Borla Sport Cat-Back exhaust system for the 2018 Mustang EcoBoost, CJ Pony Parts Bill Tumas gives us a quick look at the setup on the work bench. The piping is mandrel-bent 304 stainless steel measuring 2.5-inches in diameter, with integrated resonators, dual mufflers and dual tips in three different finishes – chrome, black chrome or carbon fiber.

In looking on the CJ Pony Parts website, we found that this Borla exhaust system with the chrome or black chrome tips costs $1,350 while the carbon fiber setup costs $1,500.

Borla Exhaust in the EcoBoost Mustang

Before tearing the stock exhaust off of the 2018 Ford Mustang EcoBoost, the host gives us an example of the car idling and revving with the stock system. Frankly, the results are kind of sad, leaving little question as to why someone would want to swap to an aftermarket system.

Installation

Installing the Ford Performance by Borla Sport Cat-Back exhaust system on the 2018 Ford Mustang EcoBoost begins by removing the stock system. This is as easy as removing the front clamp, unbolting the rear hangers and dropping the entire piping setup in one big piece.

Adding the Borla system begins with the y-pipe, which connects to the factory head flex pipe with the clamp from the stock system. Next, you add each of the mid-pipes that extend from the y-pipe to the area behind the rear differential, using the factory rear hangers. Finally, the mufflers clamp up to the mid-pipe, completing the new exhaust system.

Post-Install Sound

After walking us through the installation of the Ford Performance by Borla Sport Cat-Back exhaust system on the 2018 Ford Mustang EcoBoost, the video offers us a few examples of these new pipes in action. The turbocharged engine is considerably louder at idle and under load, offering more of the crackle and grumble that you would expect from a modern Ford Mustang.

Most importantly, as the host points out in the final minutes of the video, this exhaust system is nice and quiet when cruising on the highway, but when you are hard into the throttle – this piping setup lets the EcoBoost make its presence known.

"Before I was old enough to walk, my dad was taking me to various types of racing events, from local drag racing to the Daytona 500," says Patrick Rall, a lifetime automotive expert, diehard Dodge fan, and respected auto journalist for over 10 years. "He owned a repair shop and had a variety of performance cars when I was young, but by the time I was 16, he was ready to build me my first drag car – a 1983 Dodge Mirada that ran low 12s. I spent 10 years traveling around the country, racing with my dad by my side. While we live in different areas of the country, my dad still drag races at 80 years old in the car that he built when I was 16 while I race other vehicles, including my 2017 Dodge Challenger SRT Hellcat and my 1972 Dodge Demon 340.

"Although I went to college for accounting, my time in my dad’s shop growing up allowed me the knowledge to spend time working as a mechanic before getting my accounting degree, at which point I worked in the office of a dealership group. While I was working in the accounting world, I continued racing and taking pictures of cars at the track. Over time, I began showing off those pictures online and that led to my writing.

"Ten years ago, I left the accounting world to become a full-time automotive writer and I am living proof that if you love what you do, you will never “work” a day in your life," adds Rall, who has clocked in time as an auto mechanic, longtime drag racer and now automotive journalist who contributes to nearly a dozen popular auto websites dedicated to fellow enthusiasts.

"I love covering the automotive industry and everything involved with the job. I was fortunate to turn my love of the automotive world into a hobby that led to an exciting career, with my past of working as a mechanic and as an accountant in the automotive world provides me with a unique perspective of the industry.

"My experience drag racing for more than 20 years coupled with a newfound interest in road racing over the past decade allows me to push performance cars to their limit, while my role as a horse stable manager gives me vast experience towing and hauling with all of the newest trucks on the market today.

"Being based on Detroit," says Rall, "I never miss the North American International Auto Show, the Woodward Dream Cruise and Roadkill Nights, along with spending plenty of time raising hell on Detroit's Woodward Avenue with the best muscle car crowd in the world.
