TBT: Mustang Boss 302 Tackles Le Mans
The Boss 302 Might Be a Fish Out of Water at Le Mans. But That Doesn’t Stop It From Being a Blast to Drive
We all remember the Boss 302 as being the original factory racer from Ford. It was made specifically to take advantage of SCCA Trans-Am rules, and became a legend in its own right. Alas, when the name came around for the S197 Mustang, it didn’t have a series to compete in. But the ethos of a track-ready Mustang was still there. So where better to take it than Le Mans?
Fifth Gear does just that in the video above. And it’s just as glorious as you can imagine.

Ford has never apologized for the Mustang’s personality, and the Boss 302 is still a handful on the track. It’s not quite the refined experience you’ll get in a European car. But at Le Mans, it’s still plenty enjoyable to heave into a corner and rocket on out. Elite names like Porsche and Ferrari are simply no match for the Boss’s V8 grunt.
It’s amazing to think how far ahead the GT350 and GT350R would be in this type of environment. But there’s no doubt we still love the S197 Boss. Who wouldn’t wanna take it around Le Mans for a lap or two, just for old time’s sake?
