Muscle Car of the Week: 428 Cobra Jet
Obviously the key point of a 428 Cobra Jet is the engine. But for this 1969 model, it’s more significant. It was the first year of re-design by Ford to the Mustang since 19-kinda-64, and even though it was bigger and bloated, they wanted to keep true to their roots of speed. However, they departed from their roots as a pony car in favor of muscle car flavor.
The 428 Cobra Jet featured in the “Muscle Car of the Week” video below is proof of that mindset within Ford. Despite the open-top chassis, they still managed to stuff the massive V8 engine under the hood, and created a desirable cruiser — even if they didn’t know it at the time.
This car’s unique combo of Cobra Jet, with auto transmission, and open top make it extremely desirable. Mated with other rare options like the black hood stripes, hood scoop (non-functional), and hood-pin latching system, this car yearns for someone eager to have fun.
