MotorTrend Picks Their Favorite Mustang vs Camaro Moments
These Detroit ponies have been doing battle for decades, fighting tooth and nail for pony car supremacy.
For decades, the Ford Mustang and Chevy Camaro have battled relentlessly for muscle car supremacy. Sure, there are other “contenders,” but they’ve been inconsistent for the most part. These are the heavyweights, the two cars that continue to punch each other square in the jaw, year after year. So now that Chevy is rumored to be killing off the Camaro (again), it’s only fitting that MotorTrend made a video highlighting their favorite head-to-head moments between these two American icons.
Things kick off with the S550’s debut, along with the debut of independent rear suspension back in 2015. At the time, MT said “This reminds me a lot of the way Mustangs drive. When you start really pushing the car, you feel the body pitch and roll in a way that’s really entertaining.” Sadly, they ultimately deemed the Camaro to be “more fun.” Despite the fact that they couldn’t see out of the thing.
Flash back to 2013, and things were every bit as even. “Sometimes the Mustang is better, sometimes the Camaro is better,” MT said. “Every comparo we do, I don’t know how it’s going to turn out. I just look forward to driving them and seeing how it turns out.” This time around, the Mustang proved to be faster and controllable around the turns with copious tire grip.
Next up, we see the Mustang GT350R take on a Camaro Z/28. MT revels over the fact that the Shelby “feels tiny” compared to the Camaro, tossing around corners with ease. They also loved the steering feel and of course, that glorious flat crank 5.2-liter noise. Fast forward to 2018, and it’s more of the same with the revised, 3rd gen Coyote. “By pony car rules, it keeps on hitting the bullseye,” MT says. “This thing flys. It sounds awesome. And it does epic burnouts.”
Sure, there are things that MT prefers about the Camaro in each test. But it’s clear that they also love the Mustang dearly. Sadly, we may be near the end of this epic, long running battle. And that’s a bad thing, because competition undoubtedly keeps Ford working hard to build a superior product. But we have no doubt that the Mustang will continue to get better and better. And most importantly, it will keep existing for the foreseeable future!
