Matt Farah Shows Hoonigan his Fox Body

The Smoking Tire host is a huge Mustang fan, so it’s no surprise that his personal 1988 Fox Body is incredible.

If you’re a Mustang fan and have been on the internet, then you may have seen this car before. Matt Farah is an automotive journalist, founder of The Smoking Tire, and on-air host for NBC Sports. He’s also a huge Mustang guy. His first fun car was a 1994 SN95 Mustang GT. He wanted a Fox Body, but his mother said his car had to have an airbag. So, since he’s now an adult, he’s built his high school dream car.

Matt’s 1988 Mustang GT SSP began life as a California Highway Patrol car in San Diego, which is why it has the SSP or Special Service Package. As impressive as it was new, the car is now far from a stock CHP cruiser.

Underneath, the suspension is completely taken from a 2004 Cobra, using performance components from Maximum Motorsports. The track on a 2004 Cobra is wider than a Fox Body, which is why he has 3-inch fender flares at each corner. The aggressive stance of the car gives it a menacing look. It looks like the wheels would hit the flares on full compression, but his suspension was set up for track and canyon driving. So under load, the wheels tuck under the flares without touching.

Under the hood, Matt’s Mustang is very mild. He’s spent hours behind the wheel of unfinished projects and stumbling high horsepower cars. So for his Fox Body, he chose to keep it simple. The motor is a 302R GT-40 crate engine making 270 wheel horsepower and 305 pound-feet of torque. This means the car is reliable enough for Matt to use it, not just work on it. We think it’s an awesome Fox Body. What’s more, we love that it’s set up to run hard. What was your high school dream Mustang? Let us know in the comments.
