Leaked Memo Claims 2026 Shelby GT500 Is Real and Packing ‘Legendary’ Engine
If this document is legit, the 2026 Shelby GT500 could debut very soon, potentially packing an updated version of the supercharged 5.2L V8.
It was a mere few months ago that news surfaced indicating that Ford may no longer continue to use the Shelby name on its factory-based models, ending a tradition that dates back to the original first-generation pony car. That report claimed that The Blue Oval was more keen to develop its own nameplate for future higher-performance Mustang variants – in the vein of the Dark Horse – rather than paying Shelby American a licensing fee. Thus, that made it seem like the S550-generation model would be the last, but now, a leaked memo claims that the 2026 Shelby GT500 is on the verge of debuting.
This memo – recently posted on Reddit – looks to be some sort of communication from the United Auto Workers (UAW) Local 600 union to its members, at least, those that work at the Dearborn Engine Plant. It mentions a series of personnel moves that have recently taken place at DEP, which are aimed at helping support a production ramp up for the Maverick and Bronco Sport, but that’s not the most interesting tidbit present here.
Rather, the document also states that “an afternoon shift being is added towards the end of 2025 on the Niche assembly line. This volume increase is for the 2026 Ford Mustang Shelby GT500. I can’t wait until we start building engines for such an iconic vehicle with an engine that will be named Legend.” Obviously, it’s unclear if this memo is in fact legitimate, but it is quite interesting and could potentially signal the impending debut of the 2026 Shelby GT500.
Aside from the prior report that Ford was mulling the idea of ditching the Shelby name, Shelby American also launched its own version of the GT350 recently, seemingly confirming that bit of news. However, it’s obviously possible that Ford will forge ahead and continue to make and sell the GT500 on its own, as has been the case for the past few Mustang generations.
Adding fuel to that fire is the fact that DEP currently builds the supercharged 5.2-liter V8 used in the F-150 Raptor R and Mustang GTD – as well as the previous-generation GT500 – meaning that perhaps an updated version named “Legend” is destined for the 2026 Shelby GT500. Of course, this document could be completely fake and fabricated by someone that just wants to spread unsubstantiated rumors, but there is some proof that it could very well be legitimate – meaning that soon, we might just see the return of the range-topping Mustang, after all.
